ROADWORKS taking place in Stanpit over the next two weeks already seem to be causing problems, as diversionary routes prove problematic for some drivers.

Work to reduce the size of current road narrowings installed along the busy road in 2008 started on Monday for two weeks with Stanpit closed between Queens Road and Victoria Road.

Traffic is being diverted from Purewell, up Queens Road and along Mudeford Lane with cars diverted from Mudeford onto Victoria Road, along Pauntley Road and into Queens Road.

But according to Purewell and Stanpit Pact (Partnership and Communities Together) chairman, Barry Sherwin, parked cars in Queens Road, the diversionary route for both directions, are causing hold-ups to diverted traffic especially during school pick-up and drop-off times.

Barry said: “It’s going to cause massive problems. With cars parked up either side of Queens Road traffic is unable to flow properly and is backing up – especially when the schools turn out.

“I will be speaking with the council and our local PCSO Martin Sparks to see if anything can be done to ease this.”

A council spokesperson confirmed that No Waiting signs were due to be put up along the road yesterday.

The improvements are due to take two weeks as engineers work on one narrowing at a time to enable residents of Bub Lane and Johnstone Road access to their houses.

Originally scheduled to take place at the end of November, the work was postponed due to the possible effect on local businesses in the run-up to Christmas.

Businesses along Stanpit, including the Ship in Distress are open as usual.
