MORRISONS supermarket in Verwood is in negotiations with East Dorset District Council over plans to “significantly enlarge” its store.

Proposals being considered include bringing the Chiltern Drive store closer to Verwood Leisure Centre.

An alternative proposal is a larger scheme that would mean moving the leisure facilities, which are managed by Verwood Community Association, but owned by the district council.

The leisure centre has a three- court sports hall and health and fitness suite which was built in the early 1980s.

A council spokesman said the authority is now considering the best way to move forward and ensure that leisure facilities in the town are maintained, if not enhanced.

Options being investigated include relocating the leisure facilities to Potterne Park, Emmanuel Middle School or the Verwood Hub Community Centre.

The council said discussions are continuing at a senior level but, as yet, no formal plans have been submitted.

A spokesman for the supermarket chain said: “At Morrisons we strive to offer our customers excellent fresh choice, service and value.

“In the interest of providing our customers with the best possible weekly shop, we are interested in expanding the fresh food offer and range of products at Morrisons Verwood.

“We are currently in talks with the council and considering a number of different options.”

Cllr Spencer Flower, leader of the district council, said: “Proposals to provide much-needed enlarged and improved retail facilities gives this council a rare opportunity to update indoor sport and recreation facilities for the residents of Verwood and Three Legged Cross.

“If these proposals come to fruition it will provide improved facilities for the whole community to enjoy and will encourage many residents to play a more active part in sports and physical activities.
