FEARS have been expressed for the safety of elderly people after the traffic lights controlling a busy pedestrian crossing had to be switched off in one of Bournemouth’s main shopping areas.

The pelican crossing near Westbourne Arcade in Poole Road has been out of action since December 16 – but Bournemouth council is unable to say when – or even if – it might be fixed.

Diane Mackenzie, of Western Road, Branksome Park, said: “I have noticed elderly and infirm people trying to cross the road and thought how dangerous this is with the lights out.

“The traffic is very heavy as usual.

“To give drivers their due, I have seen them stop to let people cross, even though they need not have done so.”

But he added: “I do fear for the people of Westbourne crossing Poole Road.”

Mrs Mackenzie added that she had telephoned Bournemouth council and been told there was no money available to replace the lights. Councillor Robert Lawton, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “The pelican pedestrian crossing has been switched off.

“Unfortunately it has become very old and is a risk because it could potentially electrocute someone if it continued to be used.

“When equipment becomes dangerous we have little option but to shut it down as we do not want to take any chances with the safety of users.”

He added: “We are taking this opportunity to look at a long-term solution which will benefit the whole of the area.

“This is part of a wider road safety initiative for Westbourne.”

Mr Lawton said the council was looking at a number of options, one of which was to have two uncontrolled – or zebra – pedestrian crossings in Poole Road.
