A SOLDIER seriously injured in a collision with a 15-tonne Tesco lorry was also the “likely driver” in a collision earlier the same day, according to police.
The 19-year-old was “poorly but stable” in Poole Hospital on Saturday after an accident with a lorry while he was on foot on the A354 Blandford bypass.
Police say the first of Saturday morning’s collisions happened at around 4.20am when two 19-year-olds stationed at Blandford Army Camp were heading towards the camp in a silver Ford Fiesta.
The Fiesta left the road at Black Lane, Blandford, and overturned. The two men were not seriously injured but the driver ran away from the scene and crossed a field before police arrived.
The second accident happened at around 5.45am when a lorry which had just made a delivery at the town’s Tesco store was involved in a collision with a pedestrian on the A354 Blandford bypass.
The accident happened between the Tesco roundabout and Wimborne Road, near the Langton Long junction.
Police identified the injured pedestrian as the likely driver in the first accident. They closed the bypass for several hours to investigate and are appealing for information.
The driver of the Tesco lorry, a 60-year-old man from Hampshire, suffered severe shock.
Anyone who was near either collision should ring PC 1860 Brady-Conolly of Blandford traffic office on 01202 222 111.
Earlier, a male driver had to be cut free from his Ford car following a collision involving a van at Merley.
The Iveco panel van and the man’s vehicle collided on the Oakley straight just before 5am.
The man had to be cut free from his car by firefighters and police described his injuries as “serious but not life threatening”.
The road was closed for nearly three hours while the accident was cleared.
