Call to save the traditional pub from vanishing

A CAMPAIGN to boost traditional British pubs and halt the current wave of closures has been hailed by pub landlords in Dorset.

The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and the Society of Independent Brewers (Siba) have launched the I’m Backing the Pub campaign as the latest figures show that around 50 pubs are closing per week nationwide.

The campaign is calling on drinkers, publicans and politicians to do more to keep pubs open and is highlighting the negative effects of increased taxes.

An opinion poll of adults showed that most believed the tax on beer was too high and that the closure of so many pubs is undermining an important part of the country’s social and community fabric.

Pub casualties locally have included the Tatnam Hotel near Poole Stadium, the Greenridge at Upton and the Tollhouse Inn at Lymington.

Popular Bournemouth town centre pub Daisy O’Briens closed earlier this year but re-opened after licensee Mike and his landlords “renegotiated a more realistic deal”.

Daniel Jesson, pub manager at the award-winning Goat and Tricycle in West Hill Road, Bournemouth, said pubs were struggling in the face of high taxes and competition from supermarkets.

He said: “You can go into Tesco and buy three cases for £20. People are not coming out to pubs as often. They are still coming out for the social experience but whereas it was two to three times a week now it’s dropped to once a week.

“And tax is high.”

Mick Mullin, manager of the Avon Causeway Hotel at Hurn, described tax on beer in this country as “abominable”.

He added: “It’s wrong. I think the government and the licensing authority are totally out of touch with what happens in pubs and what they mean to the community."

Traditional pubs are a meeting place for older people and those who live alone, he said.

“If you take the pub out of the village where are people going to go?”

Reduce the prices, allow smoking in certain bars or pubs, ban children and go back to pubs being pubs and not restaurants that serve beer.

AND bring back bottled light ale, brown ale, mild on tap, darts and jukeboxes and pour the alcopops and "pear cyder" down the drain!

Mines a light and bitter.

It is very rare we bother to go to pubs now. As we both smoke, as most of our friends do, the smoking ban put us off going. Nowadays, we normally go over to friends houses with drink from Tescos and enjoy ourselves. To many pubs are aimed at the youngsters. Soft drinks are a rip off, per pint costing more then most beers. Sport sport sport on the tv's, usually on every available wall. I don't mind pubs selling food, in fact it's about the only time we go in now. A cheap meal and a drink if we are in town. I don't know what can be done to turn things around, but I can see lots more pubs shutting their doors in the not to distant future. the ones that are left will get more packed, putting even more people off going out fr a quiet drink.

Not all due to the economy we have,in the last few years, lost The White Horse at Pokesdown,The Tatnam in Poole,The Albion at Newtown, The Strouden Park Hotel in Castle Lane West. Infact there is quite a list of lost pubs the further back you delve. On the other hand there are some that exist now that didnt a few years back so its swings and roundabouts really.

The answer is to lift the mandatory smoking ban for pubs. Make the larger capacity venues offer both smoking and non-smoking bars and give the smaller venues the option of going either smoking or non-smoking.

Cheap supermarket booze is the reason for the demise of the pub. Banning smoking in pubs was long overdue, I now go more often, just wish the smokers would keep well clear of pub entrances. Glad the likes of 'smokeykisses' stay away!

Come and visit two out of the three pubs on Canford Heath before they close.
The Oakdale is in a worse state than the Tatnum - uninviting, dark and dank whilst the Pilot has changed hands but still going downhill fast as it still kept the existing kitchen staff who were the reason why it was sinking in the first place. The atmoshere in both establishments is dire with just crusties using the Oakdale and The Pilot is like the Mary Celeste.
Odds are The Oakdale will be next to go and the land redeveloped.
The public will not patronise bad pubs these days.
