THE Vulcan bomber, which thrilled an estimated 1.2 million people at Bournemouth’s air festival this year, could be grounded unless supporters can raise hundreds of thousands of pounds.
The iconic delta-winged aircraft – which was a vital part of Britain’s defences during the Cold War – is the only one of its kind in the world still flying.

But fundraisers need £200,000 by Christmas and another £600,000 before April to keep the plane, Avro Vulcan B2 XH558, operating.
They have launched the XH558 50th Birthday Appeal in order to keep the aircraft airworthy for its half-century in 2010.
A joint statement by Dr Robert Fleming, chief executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust, and Richard Clarke, chairman of the Vulcan to the Sky Club, said: “This appeal is urgent, because we need to commit to this winter’s work now, and that means committing to pay for it.
“This time, recognising the difficulties caused by the recession, we are asking for a mixture of direct donations and pledges.”
The Vulcan needs £2.4 million to cover operations the next year, including hangar and office rental, a large amount for fuel, and a service, with components overhauled or replaced. Revenue and donations should cover most of the bill but leave £800,000 to find.
The Vulcan to the Sky charity worked for years to restore XH558 to the sky – the first time a complex heritage aircraft has been returned to air worthiness.
An estimated 2.5 million people saw the Vulcan during 2009’s display season, increasing air show crowds by 10 to 30 per cent.
Spectator numbers peaked with the estimated 1.2 million who saw the aircraft’s display at Bournemouth’s More Bus Air Festival.
The statement by Dr Fleming and Mr Clarke added: “With the Vulcan’s – and Her Majesty the Queen’s – Diamond Jubilees in 2012, we must ensure XH558 continues to fly.”
