Is Brussels behind Spur Road misery?

Referring to the clearing of the lizards, snakes etc from the verges of the Spur Road in preparation for the major road works next year, reminds me of the clearing of the trees and rhododendrons from St Catherine’s Hill a while ago.

This was an operation which started huge protests from the general public and which resulted in the operation being scaled down somewhat.

The clearing of those trees and rhododendrons, according to the Herpetological Society, was to allow the area to become heathland so that the sand lizards and other crawling wildlife, plus the Dartford warbler, could thrive.

One day during that operation I was on the hill with my dogs and met an employee of the above mentioned society and I asked him a straight-forward question: “Who is paying for all this work?”

His reply was equally straightforward: “The EEC”.

And so, my next question is: who is paying for the clearing of the wildlife from the verges of the Spur Road? Is this one more directive from Brussels?.
