THE man behind the controversial A338 Spur Road works said yesterday’s traffic delays were “not acceptable”.
Project leader David Diaz, from Dorset County Council, agreed the queues experienced at rush hour were worse than predicted and something would have to change if the tailbacks continue into the week.
Council chiefs moved the road works from the southbound carriageway to the northbound yesterday following calls from the business community that it was having an affect on trade at their busiest time of the year.
Speaking to the Echo, Mr Diaz said: “We were concerned to hear of such lengthy tailbacks.
“We moved the works to support the commercial centre of Bournemouth during the Christmas period but we do appreciate the tailbacks that resulted this morning were worse than before.
“We will monitor it over the next couple of days to see whether it was just worse this morning for some reason.
“It is not acceptable we had problems on both carriageways and previously it was only on one.
“If it does continue over the next couple of days we will have to seriously look again.
“What we hoped to do was help the commercial centre but it affected both directions which is not the impact we wanted nor did we expect. We expected it to be worse northbound, not southbound.
“The works need to be done – there is no easy solution.”
He said the cones needed to remain out to ensure the safety of the people working on site and it would not be feasible to carry out the work at night.
He added he had listened to people’s concerns about lack of signage and communication and the council will be putting up additional signage.

Oh, there's a sign, telling me there's roadworks. What a pity I can't move anywhere because everyone else is in the same area trying to avoid them.

If the change from south to north was done to help commerce in Bournemouth, it seems to me it's backfired big time.
.
If the staff can't get into work on time, then there's no-one there to sell the stuff to all those punters that will miraculously reappear because there are no roadworks south bound.
.
And, as someone else said on the previous story about this, if this is the taste of things to come when the roadworks happen for real, Heaven help us all...
.
But then again, maybe this is just Highways carrying out an experiment to see just what will happen when the actual roadworks is....

If?! IF??? UNBELIEVABLE! How could there have possibly be any doubt about the impact? And how can there still be doubt that it won't continue?

1)What was the point of all the traffic surveys to determine the volume of traffic ?
2) What tailbacks did you expect when you reduced capacity by 50% ?
3) How do Bournemouth Council manage to cone and decone Wessex Way overnight for grass cutting and litter picking ?
4) You dont need 6-7 miles of cones to work safely over 2-3 hundred yards !
5) Please take a look at the area on Google Maps or Earth Mr Diaz you might get a better overview of the area and the chaos you are causing !

There is no legitimate excuse for miles of cones for men working in a 200yd bit of road. Also his excuse for not working at night is quite simply pathetic.
I have now heard that for 8 months next year all Spur Road traffic will be diverted through Ferndown!!!

Just a thought, in France if they work on a two way, two lane system, they shut one side completely and turn the opposite side into a one lane each way road, with a speed restriction, and no overtaking.
.
Then I suppose those travelling near to the centre reservation would be moaning because they cannot see the greenary clearly, or they cannot turn off at Blackwater if southbound or northbound routed.
.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.
