A338 Spur Road brought to standstill in both directions

Even worse - that is the overwhelming response from motorists in Bournemouth after changes to the controversial A338 Spur Road works caused more chaos across the conurbation on Monday.
One angry driver said it took him one hour and 40 minutes to get from Boscombe to Wimborne and another spent 50 minutes travelling from Queens Park to Westbourne – a journey that should only take 15 minutes.
Yesterday morning marked the start of the surveying and environmental works moving from the southbound carriageway of the Spur Road to the northbound.
Dorset County Council chiefs decided to switch the works following concerns from businesses in Christchurch, Poole and Bournemouth that their timing couldn’t have come at a worse time of the year.
But not only did the works cause heavy tail backs as expected on the northbound carriageway, they also left traffic at a standstill on the southbound lanes from the Cooper Dean roundabout to St Pauls roundabout as motorists travelling northbound tried to leave the Wessex Way early.
Yesterday project leader David Diaz said: “We do appreciate the tailbacks that resulted this morning were worse than before.
“It is not acceptable we had problems on both carriageways and previously it was only on one. If it does continue over the next couple of days we will have to seriously look again.”
Many motorists were left fuming. One wrote: “So the road works start at Blackwater Junction with just a small section of road being worked on, yet the bollards start at Cooper Dean. And they wonder why the whole area is gridlocked this morning. Put the bollards out after rush hour. Surely that makes more sense than Bournemouth coming to a complete standstill, thousands of lost hours at work, CO2 being pumped into the atmosphere from stationary cars. These works are a complete joke.”
And another motorist said: “The management of the whole project is completely appalling.
“At least last week there was one moving carriageway – now they have two at a virtual standstill.
“The delays on the southbound side are just as bad as last week (15-20 minutes) despite the roadworks having moved side – it’s just they are now at the Bournemouth end rather than the Ringwood end.”
Nigel Hedges, president of Bournemouth’s Chamber of Trade and Commerce, said: “The chamber of trade regrets any problems encountered by people trying to get into work or to do shopping.”
He suggested people should change their travel patterns to avoid getting caught up in the delays.
“It is obvious that people are going to have to change their travel plans. Why not come in early and have breakfast in the town or look for alternative routes?”
Reports this morning suggest traffic had avoided the A338 into town, leaving the Wessex Way clearer than yesterday.
But some drivers were caught up in long jams in Boscombe and Southbourne as motorists tried to take the normally quieter back roads.

I travel to Southampton from Bournemouth every day. Not only has the work on the Spur Road caused me major problems it also meant that my father-in-law had to leave his car at Bournemouth hospital and walk home yesterday after an appointment as he could not get out of the car park!!! The hospital should have its own junction off the A338 and the Airport should have one as well. Cooperdean is overloaded with far too much traffic all converging on one big mess of a junction. Its a roundabout with traffic signals, filter lanes and yellow boxes leading to a multilane road that eventually becomes a cart track! Who ever thought that was a good idea! No wonder visitors freak out when they have to negotiate it.
The only word for the councils and the planners involved is MORONS!
As a voter in Dorset I will vote for any part that has plans to fix out dreadful roads. So councillors, take note, the longer it goes on the more it becomes an election issue.

I have again used the A338 today, and found my journey compared to the other day, quicker, and the return even faster, subject to speed limits.
.
I however do laugh at those refusing to use Bournemouth. Do they seriously think that there are no road works going on anywhere else. Mistaken if you do.

The quality of driving on the alternative routes is appalling with junctions blocked by inconsiderate motorists trying to fit a car into a gap big enough for a cyclist. Road rage will follow.
At present the level of harmful gas pumped from the cars and buses will probably kill the wildlife that is being protected.
One other thought, when the carriageway work takes place next autumn will the vegetation that is being cleared have grown again? If so why bother.
Work 24/7 and get the job done. There is no other solution. Suspend the work and see the road do its proper job of getting people to and from work.

Having read all of these comments, I am disappointed that so far we have not had the normal response from Dorset County Council :- 'We regret any inconvenience and lessons will be learned for the future!'
Really though, it's rather like being in the EU - faceless bureaucrats in Dorchester taking ill thought-out decisions with little regard to the effect upon ordinary people and our elected county councillors apparently unwilling or unable to influence things.

How many times do I have to say it ??...the work does not have to be done during rush hour ! Place the bollards around the 20 yds that are being worked on between 9 & 5...ok it may take longer to complete the work but atleast thousands of us wont be disrupted every day.

Perhaps the work could be done during the longer hours of daylight as it is light between 4.30 am and 10.00 pm in June and July.
But no, the wildlife would be active.

I am assuming that we all have some degree of intelligence, and do realise that this is the best time of year to capture such things as reptiles, as they are in hibernation, a deep sleep, and are much easier to catch, usually without any problems. To change this to the summer time as someone suggested would take much longer, and most reptiles will be breeding at this time. Ask any Herpetologist.

HSAW and no doubt EU legislation depicts the safety zone marked out by cones or bollards, so as to give full protection to those working with in. If you have worked on a highway or motorway, you will understand why when you are working with your back close to passing traffic who do not have a care for those doing the work.

You have all said that leaving earlier, or later will not make any difference, it still takes ages to get through, so what difference does it make of when they are laid out. I think you are thinking more of yourself, and not those who also have to use the road later in the day.

Unless the DCC can come up with some other idea, it looks like it is the A31 through Ferndown, or A35 through Christchurch, or a slow drive up and down the A338.

Poole_god; Sorry mate, not blinkered at all. Just stating the obvious. If after 3 or 4 days there has been no change, then it is unlikely there will be any change. So why not let it continue as it is. Options have been given, so use them, or go slow. Simple really.

Also if it's so dangerous to put them out earlier why if there no speed limit through the bollards ???

I took your advice and consulted a Herpetologist and she said my herpes have completely gone.
What you and your band of defenders of the indefensible are not telling us, although I may have missed something in your essays, is the effect the removal of a vast number of trees along that stretch of roadside is having on the habitat of other wildlife there.
We do seem to have an odd approach to animals in this country. On the one hand we seem happy to obliterate wildlife in Iraq and Afghanistan, all in our name apparently, although I specifically asked not to be included, while on the other hand we bring parts of our own country to a standstill in the name of the EU.

Today a drove from the Lansdowne to Ferndown via Whiteleg Way ( well I actually missed this and went down the offshoot of Wimborne Road ) and it took me 45mins!! This is not acceptable.

Chris,WWW - if you had an ounce of intelligence you would realise that it is not cold enough for the reptiles to be in hibernation. You would also realise that these jams are putting lives at risk as they are hindering the emergency services and disrupting the Hospital. Many thousands of people have no option other than to travel at peak times as they have to earn a living. - you may be lucky but others are not.

People who are linear thinkers, drafts players never get the point. Things work like chess in real life, they are interconnected!! Any fool should see that. So, we are not bleating about being stuck in a jam on the A338! The road network (network should be clue here) is interconnected. Causing a block on one road causes a cascade of problems on a local road system already at or near capacity. That's just the start, it impinges on other services, buses, ambulances, paramedics, schools, ... This is not a isolated gripe about the A338 it's about how poor local planing is carried out (or not in this case). I have lived and driven in other countries where these issues are taken into account and solved. We are not the worst by a long way. Bangkok has a really bad traffic problem and India is chaos but the traffic does at least move.
We are all responsible for getting this situation put right. Use your voted make your comments to the media. If, as some people suggest, we keep quite and put up with it then things will never change. So, to quote Douglas Adams, "keep banging those rocks together!". Meanwhile the rest of the world will be making progress with systems that actually work with enough redundacy to cope with a bit of resurfacing work!

To clarify, reptile relocation was carried out during the autumn without lane restrictions and stopped for the winter before the cones were put in place. The current lane closures are necessary for verge clearance work, which needs to happen to clear overgrown drainage ditches for maintenance next year.
This release should also help answer some of the questions relating to working at night and removing/replacing cones during the daytime.

I do not like traffic jams, necessary or not, but I do know when there is nothing anyone can do about it. But I would rather take an alternative route as I have mentioned, taking longer, than sitting for the same time in a traffic jam. This is what makes me laugh. People will sit in a jam for hours, but refuse to go another way adding on an hour or so or even less to their journey..

Like yourself, and everyone else, I am entitled to my opinion. You continually talk about the 9am and 5pm cone shift, therefore why can I not talk about the unecessary whinging and moaning about something that cannot be changed.

fedupwithjobsworth: I am right you are wrong, they hibernate regardless, read up on it. Not that I have mentioned anything about the hospitals or emergency services, I have not seen or heard any indication of complaint from them as yet. This evening whilst out, I have seen ambulances parked up at two different locations, both miles from the hospital and depot, waiting for calls.

The work planned for next year is, I'm sure, necessary. If the council had left all this clear up until then, thus extending the length of time those works would take, then people would be saying "Why didn't you stagger the operation"

On the other hand, people are saying "Why don't they just do the whole thing in one hit".

Then again, if they don't do the work at all and just do the drainage work without a care for the sloworms, reptiles etc, then animal rights campaigners and environmentalists will be up in arms and you will have more trouble on your hands. Remember Twyford Down?

The point is well made, though, as to why they don't put the cones out after 9:00 and pull them back at 4:00.

The BBC website first reported on these roadworks back on 18th Feb 2007!!!!!
But yet again everyone said "Yeah, whatever..." ... that is until the roadworks actually started and they all got caught out!!
