Accused: ‘I didn’t use knife on Luke’

A DRUG dealer co-accused of murdering a Bournemouth University student told a court he didn’t want anybody to die.

Delaine Gordon Brown, 22, of Wyndham, told Winchester Crown Court that he and co-defendants Larbi Mohamed, 21, and Saeed Alkadir, 22, were in a car when they spotted student Luke Campbell cycling along Walpole Road, Boscombe, in November last year.

The court was shown CCTV footage of Brown half getting out of the car and making a grab for Luke and missing.

Brown told the court that he had the knife in the front pocket of his hoodie but denied taking it out when he spotted Luke.

Brown said he chased Luke up St Clements Road and thought Luke had gone over the bridge but then spotted a figure running through the alley.

He said: “I ran down after the figure. As I got down there I couldn’t see anybody and as I’m going to turn round, I felt the knife drop out of my pocket.

“As I’ve gone to pick it up I heard movement behind me. As I’ve heard the movement I’ve automatically reacted to the movement behind me. I tensed up expecting something.

“Someone was just on me as if he was trying to force me to the floor. I tried to get him off.”

When asked if he had deliberately pushed the knife into Luke’s body, Brown replied: “No”. Brown added: “The only thing I remember is him moving back and then I ran.”

Brown said he was only carrying the knife “just in case I needed to protect myself”.

Prosecutor Nigel Lickley QC asked Brown: “Was there blood on your hands from using the knife?”

Brown replied: “I didn’t use it on him. I had hold of it but didn’t use it.

“It all happened so quickly. I can’t remember. I wish I could but I can’t.”

Alkadir, of Lambeth, Mohamed, of Southwark, and Brown all deny murdering Luke.

The trial continues.
