THE Corfe Castle man extradited to Hungary remains locked-up without charge in what his father had described as “backward, brutal and barbaric” conditions.
Michael Turner, 27, whose family run the Castle Inn Pub, was handed over to forces in Budapest a week ago.
But despite a year-long legal battle prior to his extradition he has yet to be charged. An appeal against his continued incarceration in this way was lodged yesterday and will be heard in 15 days.
His father Mark told of the family’s distress at the conditions his son is being held under – as relayed to him by his Hungarian lawyer.
He said: “He’s not allowed to use the telephone, he’s not allowed mail. He’s in unsanitary conditions – not allowed a change of clothes or a shower, or to even to brush his teeth.”
Mr Turner added: “We are distressed and angry. Angry at politicians who told us there was this great parity within Europe, within European systems.
“They make us feel like going from one European country to another is like going from Devon to Dorset. This clearly shows how wrong that is.”
Michael, and former business partner Jason McGoldrick, both deny the accusation that they defrauded more than 100 people following the collapse of their Budapest-based marketing company – which folded owing creditors £18,000.
They didn’t find themselves facing extradition until five years later after Hungary joined the European Union.
Mark Turner is planning a coach trip for supporters from the village to travel to London to hand in letters of protest to Parliament and the Hungarian embassy.
He said: “We will be asking how can this have occurred and that no more British Citizens are extradited to this cruel, barbaric regime.”
