Lane closures as A338 Spur Road work starts

PREPARATIONS will get under way today (Monday) for a major £26 million scheme to transform Dorset’s busiest road.

Short sections of the A338 Spur Road will be restricted to single carriageway in a bid to ensure the safety of Dorset County Council workers and motorists.

During recent months ecologists have been relocating protected species of reptiles from the grass verges along the dual carriageway, between the Ashley Heath and Cooper Dean interchanges.

From today the county council will be carrying out a detailed survey of the area. Throughout the winter a barrier will be erected to ensure that reptiles do not move back into the area.

Scrub vegetation will be cleared from the verges to deter birds from nesting there and aid further reptile rescue next spring.

The South West Regional Assembly has approved almost £26 million for the county council to renew the road, which was built in the early 1970s.

The scheme, which is due to get under way next autumn, will involve a total reconstruction of the carriageway, improvements to drainage systems and renewal of safety barriers along a 6.5-mile section.

A recent survey of land adjacent to the road showed that it is home to all six species of reptile in the UK which are protected by UK law.

The sand lizard and smooth snake have additional protection under European law.

A county council spokesman said the authority had a statutory duty to protect and conserve important habitats and species.

Common species have been rescued through the autumn and all species will be relocated next spring following their winter hibernation period. The reptiles are being moved to nearby nature conservation areas.

The traffic looked fun this morning

Transformed? This would suggest its going to be increased to 3 lanes each way with a mono-rail above to bring comuters in from the dormitory towns around Bournemouth. But it sounds as if there's going to be massive disruption and no change!

Monorail...monorail.
...MONORAIL!!

And yes, it does sound as if it's not being made any wider or bigger. And didn't they just do "major" works on it about a year ago?

Sounds like the Council's latest "dig up the road plan to congest traffic".
I think we can take it as read that this road will not be widened and that the notorious Blackwater junction will not be sorted out. They will spend £26m, cause massive traffic disruption and when it is finished nobody will notice any difference - jobsworths in action.

As I've said many times before...councils cause congestion just so that they can levy taxes to 'cure' it!

It's about time they got on with building the Monorail from Bmth airport to Bmth rail station....plenty of time for that I suppose.

Public sector employees (I refuse to call them 'workers' as they do not know the meaning of the word 'work') do not need to get to their offices on time unlike normal people, so they are happy to sanction traffic jams. They do not understand the consequences on we who actually work for a living.

The spur road southbound is down to one lane....traffic queues are horrendous....yet no-one is doing anything in the roadworks.

Is it rocket-science to have the cones removed when the workers go home ?

I guess they have to spend the money on something else they won't get as much next year. Its all a con...

Regular commuters who use the spur road are entitled to advance warnings of any potential hold ups due to roadworks. Come on DCC, surely you can put a sign up at least a week ahead for goodness sake and give us the time period as well. Is it also beyond the realms of possibility to publish a timetable for the whole of the winter so that all of us weary commuters can plan ahead? Shame on you DCC. Atrocious management.
