Fire at former Diplomat Hotel in Bournemouth

A BLAZE broke out in the top floor of a derelict hotel near Bournemouth’s town centre.

Firefighters were called to the former Diplomat Hotel in Durley Chine Road at 11am today (Friday November 6) by members of the public.

They found a fire in the top floor of part of the building had spread to the rest of that floor. The road was closed while the blaze was brought under control.

Station manager Steve Isaacs of Springbourne said: “There was no one in there when we arrived and we didn’t need to evacuate or rescue anybody. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

The hotel has previously been targeted by squatters. An application has been submitted to build 14 flats on the site.

Strange isn't it that the empty buildings that catch fire always seem to have the same core people behind the planning applications to develop them? Surely its not just coicidence that they're hotels in tourism core areas and conservation areas where its more difficult to get planning consent?

I am a Television production student from Bournemouth and me and my course group were at the scene of the fire today. We were planning to shoot our next assessed film there and went to check out the location. Unfortunately, we arrived just at the same time as 4 fire engines and firefighters trying to put out the blaze!

It's criminal that developers are allowed to let these unoccupied buildings fall into such a state of disrepair.
I realise they don't want to spend money on them but they should at least be legally obliged to secure them and to regularly ensure that security is still in place.
