Ordnance Survey unveils amazing 3D map - and it's of Bournemouth

THIS amazing 3D representation of Bournemouth could be the future of Ordnance Survey maps.

The agency chose the town to trial its new laser mapping technology - and say it could revolutionise the way we think of maps forever.

Glen Hart, Head of Research at Ordnance Survey, said: "Three-dimensional maps in themselves aren't new, but what we've achieved in Bournemouth is a level of accuracy and detail that's never been done before.

"This technology could change the way we map the country, but also have a massive impact on things like personal navigation."

The map took three years to make. Full story in tomorrow's Daily Echo.

I have a question about this, which I`m sure many are thinking.
When we had the "Google Cams" recently in town were these in fact "OS Cams", instead, as the town is still not published as photographed for Google usage on the web?

They were indeed Google's cameras and it takes 6 months before they are uploaded to the Google maps/earth pages. I know becuase i laid in the road to stop the Google man so as to ask this question and then promptly chased him down the road in my pants. Just for research purposes of course.

Ah, well the reason I asked, Mullerman, is that I stood outside my house and waved at the camera when it went by ,along with my dog.
Anyways, with that info, I`m sure you will spot me when the maps are finally put up live on the net and I indeed, will recognise yourself also. :)

I don't usually do serious posts on here, but I have to say that as a map that is particularly useless. It's a view from a helicopter which could have been taken in 5 minutes. From that, how could you get directions, heights, road names or distances.

I can't believe it's actually that useless, so I will go to the OS site and come back in half an hour and eat my words.

Nope - still not convinced, although the OS are marketing it more as a tool than an actual map.

Somehow, the OS youtube demo linked me to this, which appealed to my sense of humour (sorry, way off topic, but it's late)...

I had just left the, now closed, Chinese Restuarant in Westover Road the other year and was incredibly confronted by a very panicked and well known gentleman who wanted to know where the Pavilion was as he was due on stage in ten minutes.
I pointed to the building , quite literally behind him at this point much to his relief (and probably , the bookers and audiences`), so I do now, in reflection, have to ask, would the new 3D OS map have helped him find his gig?

Errmmm...No!

(Does not the CameraObsucra provide in similar service that nobody really requires?)
