A race-winning swim for a good cause has put a former champion back on track for aquatic success.

Hannah Mackay, 30, from Witchampton, was the first woman home in a 4.6-mile race around Brownsea Island, from which she raised £150 for Poole Women’s Refuge.

“Perfect conditions” saw Hannah triumph over all swimmers not competing in wet suits, beating all the male competitors, and finishing six minutes ahead of the nearest woman.

But a last minute hitch in her choice of ferry – Hannah boarded the Sandbanks to Studland chain ferry by mistake – nearly resulted in her missing the race completely. Now the sports masseur plans to push ahead in her quest for further aquatic glory after winning her first competitive outing in 15 years.

“Addiction” to daily swims between Boscombe and Bournemouth Piers has left Hannah well prepared to follow teenage success with the Bournemouth Dolphins team.

Plans to run a marathon have been scrapped and Hannah is now seeking a trainer to help her prepare for a 15-mile sea swim next year in Greece.
