Attempts to quiet fears over flights from Bournemouth Airport

AIRPORT officials have spoken out to quiet fears over noisy night flights.

Concerns have been raised over noise limits in a Bournemouth Airport consultation document revealing that noise from flights could increase three-fold without the need for further permission.

The consultation was launched in the same week as a statement from Thomson Holidays and First Choice, announcing new routes from the airport next year to Turkey, Corfu, Tunisia and Sharm el Sheikh.

But Bournemouth Airport’s spokesperson, Sally Windsor, said a number of misconceptions had arisen in recent weeks over the number of passenger flights operating at night next year.

She said: “To set the record straight, at the moment, we do not envisage that there will be much variation from this year's programme. “In fact, working on current information provided by the tour operators, there could be a slight reduction in passenger night flights during the 2010 summer season.”

Less than 30 night flights a week had been made during this year’s peak summer season, she added, with all but five of them used for the delivery of mail and newspapers.

Annual noise from the airport stands at 895 Quota Count points, with noisier aircraft using up more points, in a bid by authorities to encourage airports and airlines to use the quietest aircraft.

The airport’s noise consultation document shows a yearly limit set by Christchurch Borough Council of 3,100 points – more than three times that currently used.

Annette Brooke, the MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said the limit meant the airport could increase the number of flights without having to seek permission.

“We have started a petition calling for no extra night flights.

“I think people like using the airport, but they see more night flights as a step too far,” said Mrs Brooke.

A Broadstone resident said her concerns over disturbance from night flights were shared by a number of people in the area.

“We are under the flight path. When aircraft come in low, we can read the name of the carrier.

“If this was transferred to night flights and night flights increased, we dread to think what the noise would be like,” she said.

If people care to look at the pending flight times for the new routes next year, that will see that the flight all take off before 11pm. The return flights do arrive back at around 1 - 2am, and another around 4am, but aircraft noise on landing is far lower than take off, in particular with the type of engine used by these aircraft.

As I always say, the airport was there before the residents. Technology would tell one that an airport will get noisier as the years progress.

The airport is going to get bigger, and there will in the future be more aircraft. Great news for travel and for the town.

Can't wait for my cheap holiday to the sun and the convenience of driving 2 miles up the road to catch my plane!! More flights to sunny destinations please Bournemouth airport.

I used to live in Windsor and loved watching Concord fly over the house and trying to guess where all the jets were flying to and from. But, I was 6 at the time!

You should save the planet and WALK the 2 miles to catch the plane !

I certainly remember the LHR to JFK 7pm take-offs of Concorde in the late '80's. I rented a house in Colnebrook, just a few 100 yards from Heathrow's west perimeter fence....could wave to the pilot, but my God....what a noise !!

These moaners "aint heard nuttin" !

When not in Bournemouth, I live under the Heathrow flightpath, where we probably get the same number of flights in half an hour as Bournemouth gets in a day.
In this part of the world, the Annette Brookes are the well-heeled from Richmond, whingeing about aircraft noise - the very same people whose business and leisure lifestyles have prospered on their ability to travel freely. It is just another expression of NINBYISM.
The reality is that modern jet aircraft (the kind that operate from Bournemouth) make considerably less noise that their predecessors. A couple of flights a night will make little difference, and certainly no more than the usual cacophony of road noise that most of us endure well into the early hours.

Just for the record Hurn Aiport was started in 1939l the Church at West Parley dates back to the 12th century, and settlement is referred to in the Domesday Book

Relevant ? probably not but lets squash once and for all the notion that the airport predates human settlement

We live in Ensbury Park and the worst offenders in the air are those noisy little 2 man planes that fly over on a Sunday morning - they're deafening and hang around a lot longer than the 'holiday' jets, who's noise we barely notice. The noise of these little 'wasps' is so bad it drowns out the radio/TV sound as they fly over.
