ANDREW Aldridge was left ruing a big rut on the starting gate that he blamed for missing out on a maiden paid-18 point maximum for Buccaneers.

The Kiwi star was in devastating form as he scorched to five race wins and a stylish 16 paid 17 points haul as Bournemouth Castle Cover’s big win lifted them back to the top of the table.

But he was frustrated with himself for missing out at the tapes in heat three when he trailed in third behind Danny Warwick and Buxton’s race winner Ben Taylor.

Buccaneers, who gained revenge for their 54-40 defeat at Buxton on Sunday without unavailable captain Jay Herne and injured Mark Baseby, had expected a tougher fight from the play-off chasing northerners.

Buxton’s hopes of causing an upset died though after Craig Cook, who notched a dynamic 19 paid 20 as they became the first team to lower Buccaneers’ colours in the league on Sunday, withdrew from the meeting after heat seven.

After scoring seven from his opening two rides, he was diagnosed by the track doctor with sickness and diarrhoea caused by possible food poisoning and was forced to pull out.

Cook’s withdrawal, which came with Buxton trailing 27-17 and their riders having taken the chequered flag three times, killed the encounter stone dead.

From then on, Bournemouth ran riot, hammering in six more heat advantages with only Taylor, who got 13, putting up any real fight.

Kyle Newman (13+2) was unfortunate to miss out on a possible six-ride paid maximum when he suffered engine problems and was excluded from heat 11 under the two-minute rule.

It was harsh on the youngster, who produced the highlight of the contest when he chased Cook hard throughout race seven, finally getting his reward when the bike of the Hitmen’s spearhead lifted on the final bend.

Cook drifted wide, allowing Newman through for a stunning victory.

Jerran Hart (11+1), guest Grant Tregoning, Danny Warwick and Aaron Baseby all did their jobs, with John Resch grabbing his first ever National League race win in heat 14.

It was Aldridge, though, who was the really on fire, and he said: “It wasn’t my best because I actually had an 18-point maximum in my first meeting for Rye House last year.

“I was a bit gutted not getting out of the gate in my second ride tonight. I let myself down big time.

“I went into a rut that I didn’t ought to have done and it just didn’t pull enough out of the start as well as it should.

“If it had, I think I would have won that race as well.”

Aldridge, who also excelled on the first and second turn, added: “In a lot of meetings, I have dropped one point, like at Newport.

“I’ve had a couple of good runs at maximums, but it’s quite hard riding with Jay because I don’t think I will get a full maximum and nor will he.

“We team-ride together and that’s our forte, but it means neither of us wins all their races.”
