Park and ride to beat the air festival jams

DON’T get stuck in a jam and miss all the aviation action at this year’s More Bus Bournemouth Air Festival. Plan ahead and park, ride and fly instead.

That’s the message from organisers of this year’s festival, which kicks off on Thursday and runs until Sunday.

Park and Ride sites will be operating from Thursday to Sunday at the Bournemouth University Talbot Campus and King’s Park, and on Saturday and Sunday there is also a park and ride service from the Littledown Centre, Chaseside.

For £10 per group up to a maximum of seven people can use the park and ride service, taking you from the car park sites to the town centre. Or, you can cycle to town and make the most of additional cycle racks along the Eastcliff Overcliff.

There are also buses operating around the clock, taxis on hand and regular services with South West Trains offering £10 for a return ticket on Saturday and Sunday from any SWT station to Bournemouth.

Real-time traffic information can be found at bournemouthecho.co.uk plus BBC Radio Solent and Heart 102.3 will be broadcasting traffic and travel updates to try and keep you on the move and out the jams.

A number of roads will be closed during the festival.

East Overcliff Drive and Russell Cotes Road will be closed from August 20 to August 23 inclusive from 8am to 11pm.

In addition, the following roads will be closed from 8am to 11pm for the four day festival except for access: Meyrick Road between East Overcliff Drive and Grove Road, Manor Road, Grove Road and Gervis Road adjacent to numbers one to 11.

Undercliff Drive will also be closed except for access to trade 24 hours a day from Tuesday August 18 to 9am on Tuesday August 24.

Matt Callow, commercial manager at Wilts and Dorset said: “There are so many alternative ways of getting to this year’s festival. Transport options are in place so we can avoid as much road traffic and town centre congestion as possible.”

Ummm let me get this right, in order to stop being caught in a traffic jam you use the Park and Ride, ok so far but then you have to drive to the Park yes? Then you ride the bus on the same roads that the stationary traffic are on....and this helps how?

I believe that Shoreham (whose airshow is on this weekend) has a free bus service from the station. As the Bournemouth event is 'sponsored' by More Bus, the Park & Ride does seem to be a bit expensive for individuals or couples.

call me a cynic if you like, but is there any correlation between the air show being sponsored by More Bus and the Park & Ride charging £10???

Couldn't find information on the web site about parking for the disabled so won't be going!
