PLANS to modernise a New Milton war memorial to honour those who have died in conflicts since the Second World War have been mooted by a local councillor.

New Forest District councillor, Goff Beck, who is also chairman of the amenities committee at New Milton Town Council wants to bring the war memorial at New Milton’s recreation ground into the 21st century.

The facelift would include relaying the steps that lead up to the memorial and carving into them the conflicts that British forces have been involved in since the end of World War Two.

Cllr Beck, who was in the Royal Marines for 23 years, said: “The town council has already worked to improve the legibility of three sides of the war memorial but I think that more needs to be done to bring it up to date.

“While many people may question why I am doing this as there may not have been any people from New Milton involved in these conflicts, I would say that is not the point.

“Everyone should remember the sacrifice that these men and women have made for us.”

As well as inscribing the paving stones with the notable dates, Cllr Beck also wants to install two flagpoles - one for a Union Jack and another for the town flag, to fly on different occasions of remembrance.

The total cost of the renovations, which will be around £4,000-5,000, will hopefully come from county or district funds or through donations by local businesses.

Cllr Beck added: “I think it is important for new generations to remind them what our forces have done, particularly with the situation in Afghanistan dominating our headlines.

“As a nation we are beginning to open our eyes and take notice of the lives being lost.

“If I can do this for New Milton then it will be a good move for the town and we may be able to lead the way for others to follow our example.”
