I’M not much of a Dancing Queen (though some may beg to differ) but I like Abba as much as the next bloke.

As with tens of millions of others, the super Swedes – along with Freddie Mercury and his gang – provided the soundtrack for my teenage and university years.

The BSO, led by Pete Harrison complete with stylish 70s white platform shoes (I had some myself) unleashed a wave of nostalgia for loads of us in Bournemouth’s Meyrick Park on Saturday.

By the end of the two hour set of the Abba Symphonic Spectacular, there was scarcely anyone not on their feet joining in the fun.

Revitalised by the stage and screen success of Mamma Mia! the music of Abba is as popular as ever 25 years or so after the group disbanded - the age range of the several thousand strong audience was testament to that.

The hits came thick and fast, culminating in a firework finale featuring Gimme Gimme Gimme, Dancing Queen, Thank You for the Music and, of course, Mamma Mia.

The four vocalists were led by Annie Skate, who did the Agnetha bit superbly. She is probably best known for her role as vocal coach to Simon Cowell’s team on the ITV’s The X Factor and was joined by the excellent Dean Collinson, Lance Ellington and Emma Kershaw.

So off to Broadlands where the BSO do Queen next Saturday to finish off the memories of my halcyon days.

A great party – Thank You for the Music indeed.
