99p store to bring new life to Christchurch's Woolworths site

HAVING lain empty for months, the empty Woolworths store in Christchurch High Street will be opened as a discount store in the next few weeks.

Contracts were exchanged on Friday for the 99p Stores Ltd to move into the premises, which have lain empty since January, but which will hopefully open in around three to four weeks.

The company has signed a 10-year lease and hopes to create around 30-35 full and part-time jobs.

Graham Barnes, publicity officer for the 99p Stores said: “We hope that Christchurch will be the magical 99th store, which will be a massive event.

“We’ve come to the region many times as we know that Dorset people love a bargain.”

Terry Atkinson, secretary of Christchurch Chamber of Trade said: “I am really pleased to see the arrival of another highly popular outlet on the High Street.

“In these challenging times, consumers are inevitably looking for the lowest cost, and this move will attract perhaps a similar footfall to Woolworths in its heyday.

“Of course, the new store will pose a direct competition to some of the existing shops, but I am sure they will rise to the challenge.”

Paul Riley, economic development manager at Christchurch Borough Council said: “This is excellent news and yet another boost of confidence for the town centre.

“Despite the recession several new retailers have opened in Christchurch in recent months and others are due to follow.

“The 99p Store has proved to be a winning concept. It is similar to Woolworths in some ways and we wish them every success in Christchurch.”

  • The company is looking for someone to cut the opening ribbon and complete a 99-second trolley dash around the shop.

Entrants need to say in up to nine words why they love a bargain and email christchurch@gbpublicityltd. com by August 14.

Isn't this how Woolworths first started ?

Everything for 6d (or was it 1/= ?)

Before that,In USA, it was the nickel & dime store ( 5 & 10 cents )

Guess someone has to re-invent history . .

A 99p store next to Kelly's greasy spoon ? Getting more like Boscombe every day. We'll be getting east european 'Big Issue' sellers next......oh, already have these, have we ?

Perhaps Mr Garnett you could actually stae how many Big Issue sellers are of Eastern European origin.

Or would facts rather spoil your little bit of Daily Mail hate ?

I saw one big issue seller in Christchurch High Street at the weekend and when I bought the big issue they were east european.

Therefore, my representative sampling shows that 100% of Big Issue sellers must be East European.

I read the Guardian.

At last a shop in christchurch that doesnt cost the earth to shop in.......i think its a good move to allow this shop to set up in a overpriced town that is fading fast....perhaps this will bring some of the affordability back to christchurch.

A sign of the times I guess but the town is in freefall classwise. Certainly not worth a visit for the quality of shops.

And that policecar regularly illegally parked right on the pavement outside the Saxon Square doesn't help the town's image either.

Oh joy, a cheap and tacky store for our high street.

Think would rather it to stay empty.

So there you have it above, Mr Bob49 Bournemouth (smug grin).
Often there are 3 of these people. One outside the old Woolworths, one outside the ice cream shop at the corner of Saxon Square, and one running between the two gibbering away in some language which sounds vaguely like Russian (and before you say anything, I visit Russia often).

I read the Times normally, Bob49, but how many times have you read the Dail Mail to do anything other than sterotype its readership.

To be fair that is a funny retort.

I went to vist mys sister in Lymington today where they just opened and I have to say i was very pleasantly suprised. They have a LOT of exellent brands. So before you miserable lot star complaining why don't you wait before you judge it.
It's exactly what Christchurch needs to give our town a lift.

I cant believe the snobbery that some people come out with. You talk as though Christchurch is above having a 99p shop! Funny that considering the amount of charity shops we have. At the end of the day its a new business and an occupied shop in a prime location. One shop does not a town make or ruin - just be glad that its not another over-priced coffee shop or hairdressers!
