‘Landmark’ plan to rejuvenate Bournemouth multi-storey car park

A COPPER-clad hotel and two Art Deco-style apartment blocks could be built around a Bournemouth car park in a bid to revitalise a neglected area of town.

Plans for a £50 million scheme to transform the Richmond Gardens multi-storey car park at Richmond Hill have been submitted to the council.

The proposal involves building a 173-bedroom hotel, offices and 120 apartments around the existing car park and spending £1.3m improving the surrounding area.

An additional 79-space car parking deck is also proposed, while the pedestrian area around Dalkeith Steps will be re-landscaped, and a tree planting and management plan put in place.

Existing telecommunication aerials on one of the car park stairway towers will be relocated and turned into a piece of art while the second stairway tower will be planted with trees.

The proposed development has been put forward by investment company Grosvenor and The Tonstate Group Ltd.

Anthony Ramsden, principal of Planning Solutions Chartered Town Planners, who are handling the application, said: “This is a hugely significant scheme and represents a substantial investment for Bournemouth. It’s a landmark development.

“This particular area has been overlooked for years but is a major gateway to the town. The scheme would bring huge economic benefits and enhance the character and appearance of the town centre.

Most people would agree that the Richmond Gardens area is not the most attractive part of Bournemouth and the existing multi-storey car park is unsightly.

“This development will go a long way to rejuvenating the area if it is approved and will bring significant added benefits to the business and shopping district that surrounds Richmond Gardens.”

The plans will go before Bournemouth’s planning committee in due course.

'Revitalise a neglected part of the town'; I thought for a minute it was a reference to Strouden Park( two Conservative Councillors and one 'Other' Councillor )

Unreadable road signs; evening primrose weeds in full growth along our road, crumbling car park putting pressure on local roads. but of course it was the Town Centre

'The scheme would bring huge economic benefits' yes but to who? The usual greedy money grabbers. Just another sell off to some favorite developers. Trouble with those who believe they own the town is they can't see things have changed. How are they going to fill another hotel with the current inept tourist board offering nothing but ripp-off prices, astronomical parking and boozed up stags? another con.

Bournemouth needs more flats and hotel rooms like it needs a rainy summer!

If, as someone suggested in another thread that we should get Richard Carr to sort out the town centre - are they now going to suggest Dave Wells takes this part under his wing...

One of Wellsy's p*s*head palaces full of the people that would go to Richard Carr's establishments... Lovely vision for Bournemouth!

What a load of "pie in the sky" rot. Put a 173 room hotel in the middle of a pedestrianised area. How the heck are people going to get to it???? Build a block of 120 flats AND ...... all that will get a grand total of 79 parking spaces.
One can only presume that a 5 year old thought that one up and that the council are "having a laugh" with the echo reporter for even considering it.

it does say 'an additional 79 parking spaces' read it properly.theres a massive service yard there too which feeds the Dalkieth. Richmond Gardens is a really awful carpark and the arcade has never done well. to redevelop this area is an excellent proposal.why do people have to constantly knock the likes of Dave Wells or Richard Carr.Mr Wells ,like it or not ,is a very successful developer and has improved (agreed...sometimes controversially) the living conditions for many thousands of people in this town.Richard Carr ,in whatever way he is involved - has breathed life back into the flagging 'V' (formerly landmark). these guys know how to succeed and a recession needs them

no problem but you are misquoting the article which says nothing about 'only 79 car parking spaces 'and why would there be a problem getting to it ? the access would be the same as it is now as it will be built around the existing car park - THATS WHAT IT SAYS. so did you read it ? obviously not.
