Christchurch 'surviving the recession'

LATEST indications are supporting the view that Christchurch is surviving the recession better than most.

Supporters of Kelly’s Kitchen were dismayed this week when planners said there was no alternative to the cafe making way for an extension to the library, pending a decision in August.

But there is good news elsewhere as Nick Cook, a letting agent for Douglas Stevens, the company overseeing the future of the old Woolworths premises, said a deal was “fairly imminent”.

Andy Denison, principal of Denisons estate agents, also said that although activity levels in the local property market were down, interest was up, especially with properties by the water.

“At the moment it seems the market is bouncing along at the bottom but May was a very good month, June was average and July has started well,” he said.

“People are desperate to buy stuff, more so than ever before, and this is shown in the uplift we have seen in certain areas. There is a lot more buyer confidence.”

Cllr Alan Griffiths, leader of Christchurch Borough Council, said: “With regard to the wider economy there is some very good news with the completion of the lease on the Cornish Pasty Shop and negotiations going forward on another unit in Saxon Square.

“The former Woolworths premises are under offer and with the solicitors; another shop in the High Street is about to reopen and the Copper Skillett has opened in Church Street. On top of this, we have one of the busiest and most popular markets in the South of England.”

Please let it be a Cafe Rouge, or second best would be a smart family pub. There's not many affordable places for families to eat in Christchurch at the moment.

Erm....how would you create a smart family pub in what was essentially a Woolies building?

It'll be a 99p (or 89p as seems to be the new vogue)store or Iceland at a guess

I notice Griffiths forgets to mention that the Birthdays store has now closed down opposite Woolworths.

As for his comment about Christchurch being 'the busiest and most popular market in the South of England' that is ludicrous.

Of course it's not but then other towns have bigger populations or a greater number and variety of stalls.

Like most politicians he treats the public as if we are fools with his condescending overclaim.

Put that in writing in an advertisement Griffiths, and the Advertising Standards Association would force you to withdraw it.

I think he should get out more! Although my only encounter with him was when he and his colleagues were blocking the pavement on St George's day before drinking alcohol in an area where signs say it is banned.

no Iceland im afraid, which is a shame, i believe
they cant move into there as they have no rear access as regards to unloading, it all has to done through the front of the shop as woolies used to do.

The busiest market? Unlikely, but certainly bad news for Christchurch as the closure of the high street causes chaos and damages local businesses while adding precisley zero to what Christchurch has to offer apart from a load of tat.

Loved that word "absorbitant". Dictionary definition must be "to absorb alcohol at exorbitant prices".
