Take a look at our new hobby nest cam

NEW Forest goshawks Denny and Furzey may have flown the nest but there’s more bird-brained entertainment on the Daily Echo website.

A webcam has been turned on a hobby nest in the heart of the forest, and we have been given access to the footage. Carnyx Wild has set up the nestcam with the RSPB, the Forestry Commission and the New Forest National Park Authority.

As well as showing the film on the Date With Nature and Daily Echo websites, the activities can also be viewed at the Forestry Commission’s Reptile Centre at Holidays Hill, off the A35 south west of Lyndhurst.

The hobby nest has two eggs, expected to hatch in the middle of the month.

Between 900 and 2,200 pairs of hobbies fly from Africa in April and May to breed in the UK. They are 30cm to 36cm from beak to tail and 82cm to 92cm from wing tip to wing tip.

They usually hunt in the early morning or at dusk, taking small birds and winged insects in flight. During the day they usually can be found roosting in trees.

The RSPB’s Hester Phillips said: “Hobbies are lightning quick and weave through trees at breakneck speed. The fact they breed later in the year than goshawks means we can keep the Date With Nature raptorcam rolling.”
