Ferndown carnival fun... but no bunting!

POLE dancing, superheroes and marching bands were the highlights of this year’s Ferndown Carnival.

Around 800 people took part in a spectacular procession through the town with floats including Polz Apart, which runs local pole dancing exercise classes and St Mary’s Church, who donned superheroes outfits.

The ban on bunting from the carnival failed to dampen spirits with more than 6,000 people turning up to watch.

Organisers said they were “delighted” with the £1,048 raised from the event, which will be split between 40 local charities.

The procession marched for around one mile through streets, finishing at St George V field off Church Road.

The fun continued on the field with stalls from organisations including the scouts and guides, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Cats Protection, The Alzheimers Society, Waggy Tails and Polz Apart.

And music lovers were thrilled by Robbie Williams tribute act Lee Pashley, who performed in the centre of the field, and the antics of Bournemouth Carnival Band, who dressed as Spidermen. Children had fun on quad bikes.

Gail Hunter-Warburton, one of the carnival’s organisers, said: “We had a fantastic day and we were extremely lucky with the weather.

“We didn’t get to have any bunting. We had a huge amount of people come up and say it was absolutely ridiculous.

“We had a few more walking entries this year. St Mary’s Church float stood out and the vicar was dressed as Superman.”

“There was such a crowd around the pole dancing. There were girls showing people how to pole dance and there were people up to the age of eighty having a go. It is really good exercise and not sleazy.

A last minute hitch meant there was no beer tent on the field this year but its absence made it more of a family event, added Gail.

“It didn’t mar the day and people seemed to stay longer. We might not even have one next year. It was so family-orientated,” she said.

Is Ferndown safe. having all those floats and people on the streets can Ferndown take the weight on its road surface. Oh No! forgot about that!

I suspect the ban on bunting was imposed by some jobsworth trying to protect the council from any claims should it have come adrift and injured someone. Come on, get a life!

There was NO BAN. Dorset council had issued their usual advice.

Sadly the usual 'political correctness gone mad' brigade had twisted advice into a ban.

Very little commment can be made now without these folk, usually high on their latest dose of the Daily Mail, bleating about political correctness, health and safety and the nanny state.

Ironic given a recent Radio 4 documentary (aired yesterday) on how the 'no win no fee'parasites are bleeding over £780 million out of the NHS.

Eve sadder is that there is no follow up story to this inflammatory article, no asking either council for the true story and no explanation as to why so many organiusation working with Joe Public have to take so many preventive measures.

Perhaps when a few of the more rabid minority step back from their kneejerk squeaks and actually look behind the subjective headlines we might get a bit better debate about such matters as this.

Personally I doubt it. Doubt it because it would mean taking a bit more personal responsibility and, maybe, modifying their own behaviour.

Far better and easier to trot out the usual cliches.

Personally, I think Ferndown is a waste of time!!!- there's no draw to go. I have been for the last 15 years, but after the last 3 being a waste of time, I didn't bother this year. Theirs no fun in going anymore because health and safety bans everything fun!

The ban, the advice, or whatever was ridiculous. Festivals, Carnivals have bunting by virtue of its emphasis on the event.

Instead of gobbing off, why does not anyone call the Dorset Council, or Ferndown Council to boot and find out the real reasons why.

So Dorset County Council, and/or Ferndown Council, and Ferndown Carnival Committee, what did happend, what was said. Was it a ban, or advise.

I took it on myself to find out the weight of the bunting, which at a 10m length weighed in at 250g for 32 plastic flags, 150mm x 300mm on a braided cotton line. So where was the problem.

I think it was down to costs. Either council not willing to have extra work either on Friday or Saturday, with Cherry Pickers to get the buntin up.

Anyway, I thought the Carnival was good, although there was the lost of the carnival bunting.

Down with this sort of thing! I demand inflammatory reporting and reactionary comments in the absence of any real information! Oh wait, here it is.

All credit to St Marys Church in Ferndown for displaying bunting, on high, in their trees.

Umm, instead of gobbing off why dont you follow your own advice??

As Bob points out and has been mentioned before, this was not a rule but guidance, Ferndown Council need to grow some *****

We are wondering if anyone will spill the beans and say for sure if it was advice or a ban - it does seem strange to us though that nowhere else is banned from having bunting.

We hope that everyone had a good day at the carnival.

Free.Speech, before you get at me for no reason, I did follow my own advice. I do not give it without actioning myself. However, I was not given anything other than what we already knew. So I have emailed by questions, in hope (doubtful) of an answer from that direction.

I cannot abide people who instantly think one is dishing out, and standing back without finding out the facts first.

I was not referring to anyone in particular about gobbing off, moreso not Bob. I will say that my comments more than likely backed his up, More than can be said of some..........

We certainly didn't see 'gobbing off'. Well done for emailing your questions direct - hopefully or maybe an answer might come to light!

To quote Bob49:

"Ironic given a recent Radio 4 documentary (aired yesterday) on how the 'no win no fee'parasites are bleeding over £780 million out of the NHS."

Poole Hospital give out a leaflet to patients which details aftercare of a wound. However, on the back is an advert for 'Asyst' who can help you with their "free, friendly service" and compensation after an accident. Should Poole Hospital - or any hospital for that matter - be pushing such adverts?

It was extremely disappointing that there was no beer tent on St Georges field following the Ferndown carnival, but for Gail Hunter-Warburton to describe the reason as a last minute hitch is not good enough. What was the real reason? Also the kids bouncy castles (all ten of them) were blatantly overpriced at £2 for five minutes. As for the bunting fiasco. Come on Ferndown get your act together. The committee need to look at all these issues in detail.

Time for the facts !!
Firstly the Ferndown Carnival Committee is a voluntary organisation and is not run by the Council, regarding the Bunting Dorset County Council told the Committee that they would NOT give permission for them to erect the bunting.
Regarding the Beer Tent - the local Pub in Ferndown who was to run the Beer Tent 'forgot' to get the licence in time, bouncy castles - there was actually only 5 and what they charge is nothing to do with the Carnival - on the other side - Ferndown Carnival was a huge success again this year raising a great deal of money for local charities

Thanks for that, however I have not suggested that the committee is run by the council. I agree that the carnival was a success too and having actively taken part it was a gret shame to see no beer tent and then a good number of overpriced activities for the kids. Next year why not just say that these people cant have a pitch on the field unless they play fair on price.
