Winkton villagers fear speeding drivers put lives at risk

CONCERNED residents who live along a narrow village road have been reassured that measures are being taken to slow down drivers breaching a 30mph speed limit.

Residents who live along Burley Road, near The Lamb at Winkton, say that cars are “bombing” down the small country road at “stupid” speeds, causing a danger to other cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

Gordon Pierce, one resident, said: “The situation is getting ridiculous. Someone is going to be killed if nothing gets done about it.

“Drivers have always sped along this road but it seems to be getting worse as time goes on.”

Bob Baker, transportation and highways manager at Christchurch Borough Council said: “We have carried out work along Burley Road and have put up new signage to the entrance of the 30mph zone in an effort to curb the speeding.

“We have also put in counters along this road but once the results are forwarded to the relevant agencies then there is little we can do, other than take preventative measures.

“But we would like to reassure residents that, within our remit, we have done everything we can.”

PC Jane Moore from the Burton and Winkton Safer Neighbourhood Team said: “We are aware of residents’ concerns and it was one of the issues raised at our local PACT meeting.

“There is currently a static speed camera deployed at the site and, when we can, then our team goes there with the laser camera too.”

Judy Jamieson, chairman of Burton Parish Council said: “This is an ongoing issue, which we have placed as one of our top priorities.

“We are aware of the problem and would like to reassure residents that we are keeping a close eye on the situation.”

I travel the Burton to Ringwood road three times a week and no-one sticks to the speed limits there either. There always seems to be a driver trying to get in my boot because I try to keep to the limit. They need a speed camera just before the 40mph approach into Ringwood..... at about 8.55am when the dimwits are late for work.

There is apparently a new camera at the lights on Holes Bay Rd/Stere Avenue.

Apparently, fines from the first couple of hours it was in operation will pay for the new Holes Bay Bridge.

One can only hope that those who consider speed limits are only for other people, will one day write their cars off, providing they don't kill or injure anyone else in the process.
