Help Youth Cancer Trust move to new centre

A CHARITY offering a vital lifeline to young cancer patients is appealing for help in moving home.

The Daily Echo-backed Youth Cancer Trust (YCT), which offers free holidays to 14 to 30-year-olds at Tracy Ann House in Alum Chine, launched a campaign last year for a £250,000 extension.

It is so far £60,000 into that appeal, but the charity’s trustees have decided that, at the rate the organisation is growing, it would be more cost-effective to move to new premises.

YCT’s Georgie Hillman said: “Thank you so much to everybody who’s donated so far to the appeal.

“We’ve had 225 youngsters this year, which is the most we’ve ever had and we’re already taking bookings for next year.

“Thinking about the future of the charity and how it’s growing, to be able to expand in the future the trustees have decided it would be more cost-effective and better for the youngsters to move the facility.

“We’re extending the appeal to achieve a total of £1.5m.

“We will sell Tracy Ann House and move to somewhere in this area which has more land, a larger building and better disabled access.”

The initial appeal aimed to fund more accommodation, a larger games room with better facilities and more car parking.

But YCT’s trustees now hope to be able to cater for up to 15 youngsters at a time and to provide more activities.

Georgie said: “It’s just going to be more for them to do.

“Some of the people that come and stay with us are not well enough to do go-karting or water sports – they want more things to do that are gentle in the house.

“As the charity becomes more widely known across the UK, more and more youngsters are wanting to come and stay with us.

“We don’t ever say no and we don’t ever want to have to say no.”
