Plans for Bournemouth travellers' site spark angry protests

ANGRY residents campaigning against plans to put a travellers’ site near their homes have met with senior councillors to plead their case.

Council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin and cabinet members Cllr Bob Chapman and Cllr Jane Montrose were among those that met with concerned Westbourne residents.

The proposed site is a patch of council-owned land at Cambridge Road and Suffolk Road, which is currently used as a contractors’ compound.

But its close proximity to the town centre, Bournemouth Gardens, a children’s play area and several blocks of flats has sparked a wave of protest.

An online petition against the plans has already attracted over 1,000 signatures and residents are planning a protest on the steps of the town hall before a crucial cabinet meeting on Wednesday, June 24.

On Monday, June 22, dozens of residents gathered in Westbourne at a protest meeting.

Max Clarke, who is organising the opposition, said: “People are confused as to why our Conservative administration is trying to push this through when it’s against national Conservative policy and it’s bad for the town.

“It was good that councillors took the time to hear our concerns but there are fears it is a done deal. That’s why we need to fight as hard as we can now.

“This is not the right site. It’s in a bottleneck, it’s near a busy dual carriageway, it’s noisy. It’s not fair either on travellers or on residents.”

Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin said: “The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) gave Bournemouth Council very little notice of its deadline of the end of June for the submission of applications. The council accelerated its process for selecting a preferred site.

“This has resulted in the report and recommendations to cabinet on June 24. However, one of the recommendations allows for consultation with local residents who live near Suffolk Road/Cambridge Road if the funding application is likely to be successful.

“If cabinet agrees to progress the submission, planning permission will be required, confirmation from the HCA that they will fund the site and public consultation will need to take place.

“We have already received a significant amount of useful feedback from the public following the consultations for the previous two proposed sites at Millhams and Riverside Avenue.

“We have taken this feed- back on board, particularly about the desire for a site to have effective security and we will continue to listen to the public to ensure the site will be properly managed.”

The petition is online at gopetition.co.uk. People can also email comments or questions to nobournemouthtravellersite @hotmail.co.uk.

this site strikes me as a very good choice. its going to be a well maintained, well run and frequented by people that i'm sure will obey the rules. all this talk of it being in the centre of town etc is nonsense.so ''these people will overrun the town centre and the beaches'' because of the location of the proposed site. put the site near townsend etc and they wont be able to get anywhere near the town centre or the beaches because if they ask anyone where they are we wont tell them. its a great site..get used to it

None of the "travellers" will use it anyway seeing as they will have to pay. Let's face it, this site is only being put there so the council can legitimately evict them from Kings Park etc. Well, that's the theory anyway. Time will tell if they have the nuts to do it.

" they wont be able to get anywhere near the town centre or the beaches"

You got to be joking charley......have you seen the vehicles these travellers have?

As for the Councillors comment..."Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin said: “The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) gave Bournemouth Council very little notice of its deadline of the end of June for the submission of applications. The council accelerated its process for selecting a preferred site."

I smell a rat here.

The Council have known for a long time what the chronology is of choosing a site. They have just sat on thier hands, waited for the deadline of submission then said....."its got to go there. We have run out of time and options"
What a load of tosh.

Charley, I thought your post was quite amusing, until I realised you are being serious...

Perhaps you'd like them in your vicinity instead if you think things will be so well run and the 'visitors' will obey the rules.

buy a house like everyone else has to instead of sponging off of the council

This is a poor choice of site. In the town centre, backing on to the gardens in a residential area with insufficent roads to cope. No good will come of this.

So Charley thinks the rules will be obeyed and the site well maintained. I have two words to that. Mannings Heath!!!!

Perhaps there should be a clause.

Stay on this site and the local residents get a half price tarmac drive?

Would that make the local feel better?

Why is Cllr McLouglin allowed to speak untruths regarding the matter of time to get a site up as produced by the HCA. Bournemouth has known for well over a year on this matter.

How will a site for 8 pitches suffice the needs of the number of travellers that come into town. What about the traffic issue. There was an accident their today, or near by.

Bournemouth cannot find the space to waste on travellers. It is needed for homes, homes for those who are willing to pay.

Step down off your pedestal Cllr McLouglin, and see where you are coming from.

No to Bournemouth Traveller Sites.

What I think is odd is that these Irish travellers are recognised in British law as an ethnic group. Ireland, however, does not recognise them as an ethnic group; rather, their legal status is that of a "social group".

I'd be curious to know which local solicitors pick up the 'thirty pieces of silver' for defending the human rights of these ytravellers.

And wehther they would be so eager to trouser the money if they were camped at the bottom of the drive/garden.

One final note. A retitered copper of reasonable standing told me some years back that so much of their unlawful activity is not reported so as not to provoke any response !

Looking at the site on Google Earth, it isn't particularly pristine given all the junk on there.

I also know that when I've driven towards the West Cliff from the Cambridge Road roundabout, the site is nicely hidden by trees - you wouldn't realise all that junk was there.

I personally think it's the ideal venue. And it will ensure the Council have abided by the rules so that a site isn't chosen for them by Central Government

Dribble, You wouldn't relaise Boscome was there given all its junk and bad rep over the last god knows how many years!

The "visitors" are not known to be the cleanest ( meaning litter) social or friendly people you have ever meet.
The Triangle area is going under the councils knife soon and given a "make over" what is a camp site going to do for the area!
These maybe sweeping gerenalisations but going on problems from king's park and a prevous article stating that last year the council sepnt £40k cleaning up after our passing visitors!! Now £40,000 what else could the council be spending that on, I wonder???

As a betting man, I would suggest that the final location of this travellers' site being at Cambridge Road and Suffolk Road,as reported, is as likely as the Cambridgeshire Handicap starting in Cambridgeshire and ending in Suffolk!
No more bets... further spin, Cllr MacLoughlin!

Trust me I live in Northampton until a few months ago and when the 'Travellers' were up there all they did was to cause trouble (Crime rate want up), mayhem and mess a go-go when they left. This is a really bad idea here.....

So MacLoughlin actually expects people to believe that they were only given a short deadline time - who does he think we are?

On a nicer note, it really is great to see a town come together over this. The sense of community is something else!!

No matter what the residents of Bournemouth say, as our elected representatives, the Councillors will always do what they want anyway. How many councillors live near the site?

It is not about where people live, it is about where is suitable.

Have you got an sensible suggestions as to where? No??
Thought not.

Bob Chapman says “Through the vision, we hope to bring back the quality Bournemouth was built on. We’d like to protect the Triangle’s status as a key part of town by better connecting it with the main shopping streets.”

Is the traveller site part of this Vision?

I heard that several councillors have bought cheap properties in the Triangle area knowing that the regeneration project is coming so that they can cash in on increasing values - I can't see them being pleased about this site being used for travellers!

Surely Bournemouth's illustrious Councillors wouldn't sink to the level of their MPs!
