Shock demotion for deputy hopeful

A LEADING Bournemouth councillor has been axed from the cabinet after he contested the position of deputy leader.

Cllr Peter Charon, who was responsible for housing and procurement, was demoted in a shock move by council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin.

Bournemouth 2026 chairman Douglas Eyre has decided to step down following "protestations" from Stephen Macloughlin.

Cllr MacLoughlin made his announcement after Cllr Charon had challenged Cllr John Beesley for the post of deputy leader. The move forced a secret ballot of Conservative councillors, which Cllr Charon lost.

However, Cllr MacLoughlin then decided to strip Cllr Charon of his cabinet position – a move which has apparently sparked outrage amongst some Conservative councillors.

Cllr Charon told the Echo he decided to stand for the deputy leader position because it was a challenge.

“There were no real policy differences, it was a matter of approach,” he said. “I thought I had a sporting chance on the night but it wasn’t to be.

“I’m disappointed, especially when you consider the really big successes I’ve had in housing, including taking it from two to four star, the new maintenance contract saving taxpayers £10 million over eight years and the work I’ve done on the local housing company.

“I will hand over the baton to somebody and I wish my successor all the best in their new role.”

In other changes, Cllr Nick King left the cabinet voluntarily to concentrate on his bid to become MP in Mid Poole and North Dorset and Cllrs Nicola Greene and Jane Montrose were promoted to the cabinet.

Now Cllr Charon will, at least, have more time to spend with his money (and not that of Bournemouth's Council Taxpayers)!

Its a brave Cllr that decides to try and break up the partnership of MacLoughlin and Beesley. These two heavy weights of the local political world are a force to be reckoned with, as this story proves.

Once again our council is seen to operate like a dictatorship, strip away any opposition to retain power. I think its about time our little Batman & Robin act had its wings clipped and understood the concept of a bullying council. I have it on good authority that one word decent or questioning of there authority and you could end up either being locked inside the IMAX, or even worse stitched into the Surf Reef.

I Totally agree with the comments that Cllrs Macloughlin and Beesley should be made more accountable. It seems that if you do not agree with Cllr Maclouglin, you are demoted and cast into the wilderness. Is this man good for the future of Bournemouth.I do not think so.He's gone very quiet on Cllr Hughes expenses as well and according to good sources it is rare that Cllr Hughes, attends meetings. If the local tory party has any backbone they will challenge the pair of them for the sake of democracy in the town.

As long as Councillor Macloughlin enjoys the confidence of at least half of his Conservative Councillors he can hardly be accused of being a dictator. what does concern me is his seeming unwillingness to explain or commnent on matters of concern to the wider residents of Bournemouth as a whole;concernsa that have been quite fairly raised in the local press; for example the furore over councillors expenses. Is Councillor Macloughlin satisfied how the claim in question for expenses was approved, and will he explain to the wider audience of residents. and offer an assurance that this will not happen again
Perhaps finally Councillor Macloughlin should recall how twO wolves and a sheep made a democratic decision on what to have for dinner; that is the nature of our political system ; winner takes all, but at a price of disillusionment by the greater majority.

Doesn't Charon have a fair sized property portfolio, and he just happens to be in charge of housing at the council...

Yes, and Nick King has something of the night about him; so who better to represent Bournemouth Council on the Police Authority. Presumably, NickKing is not too busy to retain this nice little expense earner?!
