AARON Baseby will have an X-ray on his injured wrist today after being forced to withdraw midway through Buccaneers’ mighty 56-36 home win over Weymouth last night.

He took a nasty fall in heat eight of their National League tussle at Poole which saw Bournemouth Castle Cover move up to fourth place, six points adrift of table-topping Wildcats but with three matches in hand.

Baseby, whose brother and team-mate Mark missed the clash with a knee injury, said last night: “I’ll go for an X-ray in the morning.

“I couldn’t really ride on because I have limited movement in my right wrist and it’s your throttle hand.

“It wasn’t just the doctor’s decision that I pull out, it would have been my own choice as well.

“Hopefully it’s nothing major and I’ll be fit for our away league match at Buxton on June 7.

“Unfortunately there are two Baseby brothers sidelined at the moment. But Mark is hoping to be back at Buxton, and so am I.”

Reliving his second bend spill, when Aaron collided with Weymouth’s Terry Day, the Buccaneer added: “I got a nudge from James White-Williams.

“As I got that, Terry came across and I clipped the side of him.

“I thought I would go over on a high-sider, but I managed to get the bike down and only went out towards the fence.

“There was nothing I could do about it. I tried to get off the bike but it didn’t work out. But that’s the way it goes.”

Weymouth, the current third-tier champions, were heavily tipped to push unbeaten Bournemouth all the way, but the West Dorset side failed to deliver in front of a bumper 1,500 crowd that included a highly vocal band of travelling supporters.

Aaron’s side made it six wins out of six in all competitions this term as they warmed up for their two-legged National League Knockout Cup quarter-final re-match against Wildcats at Weymouth on June 19 and Wimborne Road on July 2.

Buccaneers’ reserve said: “We’re over the moon about winning by 20 points because we thought it would be a lot closer.

“Our whole team stood out. It was a great all-round team performance.

“It just proves we are a team that could win the league, barring injuries.

“Weymouth are top of the table and going well, but our win tonight says they have something to watch out for in the cup because I think they expected it to be a lot closer tonight as well.

“On paper, if you look at Weymouth’s team, it looks very strong, but we proved that wasn’t the case tonight.

“Lee Smart (who got 17 points) was the man to beat and he’s a good rider in the Premier League with Glasgow as well.

“I was expecting the rest of their team to have a lot better meetings than they did, but I always thought we were going to win because we’ve been riding so well at home.

“This win has given us a big boost of confidence going into the cup matches, especially as we were without Mark, who is a big performer round here.”

Weymouth duo Tim Webster (knee) and Matthew Wright (whiplash injury to his head) sustained injuries during their defeat, but both are expected to be fit for their league clash against Buxton at Radipole Lane tonight (7.15pm).
