PLANS for unusual £25,000 public artwork in Penn Hill are forging ahead.

One, a flat piece incorporating a tree, has already been installed at the junction of Bournemouth Road and Archway Road.

The second – an usual triangular block – will go at Penn Hill junction, outside Mitchells estate agents.

A leaflet is due to go out to homes in the area explaining the meaning of the odd looking work known as Chine.

It states that the art is inspired by the idea of water carrying fragments of rock, “deposited at turning points much as objects are in a river.”

Marked in the surface of the sculpture are lines indicating the road footprint of the area – which has been consistent over centuries.

Cllr Elaine Atkinson, ward member for Penn Hill, said: “This is a unique and exciting piece of artwork which adds to the ever-growing body of quality, contemporary public art in Poole.

“The council is proud to welcome this new addition to the borough and hopes that its concept, which is based on the area's historical road map, will appeal to locals and visitors to the area, alike.”

The council also pointed out that the Penn Hill Public Art project has been funded by a central government grant through the Local Transport Plan, which covers the Transport Strategy for South East Dorset – and not from council tax.
