LUCKLESS Jerran Hart cruelly missed out on a paid maximum after a last-heat fall ruined his chances of recording a full house in Bournemouth’s historic first home meeting.

He bet Poole Pirates media guru Gordon Day £10 he would go unbeaten by an opponent at Wimborne Road this year at National League level following Buccaneers’ 57-34 win at Isle of Wight in the first leg of this challenge.

The bet was made on the ferry journey back from Ryde across the Solent to Portsmouth as the Dorset club’s riders returned to the mainland following that victory.

But Hart will have to hand over the cash to the public relations man after going down on the outside of Buccaneers captain Jay Herne on the second bend of heat 15 when they were in a 5-1 position.

Both Bournemouth riders, unbeaten until then, had blasted out of the traps in front of Islanders’ duo Tom Brown and Ben Hopwood and went wide in search of the same dirt.

Hart, however, got into trouble and took his tumble, which allowed Brown and Hopwood to go underneath him and give chase to Herne.

The Aussie went on to take the chequered flag with ease and complete the first paid maximum by a Buccaneers rider following the Poole-based team’s formation over the winter.

Hart quickly got back on his bike and gave chase, but Brown and Hopwood were already on the fourth turn by the time he’d remounted, and they combined for a rare Isle of Wight share of the points.

It was unfortunate for the 18-year-old Ipswich-based lad because he’d looked a class act all meeting, with his electrifying gating way too good for the third-tier.

He will undoubtedly pile up big points for Bournemouth, who reaffirmed their status as serious title challengers.

Hart, in a centre green interview, said: “It was my first proper meeting at Poole and I’m really pleased.

“I made a decent start in heat 15, but Jay just got in my way a bit and I had nowhere to go.

“I got myself back up but couldn’t catch up. If it had been the 16-Lap Classic at Poole, not Ipswich, I might have got them, but that’s speedway.”

A crowd of about 800 saw Buccaneers canter to victory as Kyle Newman and Mark Baseby successfully warmed up for tonight’s British Under-21 Final at Lakeside, while Aaron Baseby and Andrew Aldridge also caught the eye.

Pirates star Joe Screen is expected to be named in the Team GB squad for the World Cup later today.
