Protesters head for London G20 march

CLIMATE change activists, trade unionists and charity workers from Dorset will be among thousands of protesters taking part in a London march today in the run-up to the G20 summit.

A series of events to coincide with the summit will get under way with a rally at Hyde Park which will hear calls for action to save jobs, support a low-carbon economy and stricter controls of the finance sector.

More than 150 unions, environment, faith and development groups will take part in a march for “jobs, justice and climate”.

Organisers insist that the march and other rallies, as well as stunts being planned over the next week, will be peaceful, amid fears that anarchists are intent on causing trouble.

Among those represented will be the East Dorset group of Friends of the Earth.

Co-ordinator Angela Pooley said: “Several of our members are travelling to London to take part in the march. Unfortunately I am unable to make it but I will be there in spirit.

“We are urging our members to support the protest. Those who can’t attend are being encouraged to sign petitions.”

Unions represented will include Unison, with local members travelling by coach and train from Bournemouth.

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said: “Never before has such a wide coalition come together with such a clear message for world leaders.

“Of course the G20 will not solve everything but leaders must sign up to both boost the world economy and govern it better, and show us that they are trying to build a better world.”

Charity workers travelling to London from the South Coast will include Christian Aid stalwart Helen Davis from Poole, who will also be representing lobbying organisation the World Development Movement.

She said: “We are hoping for a peaceful, but strong, protest with the G20 building a green economy and green energy supplies. Climate change affects the poorest people first, and worst.”

An Oxfam spokesman told the Daily Echo that key activists from Dorset would be taking part in today’s protest march.

That's all right then!the rent a mob is on its way, what a pathetic bunch of leeches. In my view the protest this Governement have to worry about is when the Great British public say enough is enough, and mark my words it is coming.

The bunch of leeches, otherwise politely known as bankers, will be at home quietly enjoying their ill-gotten gains; unless, of course, they are Fred 'The Shred' Goodwin, who may be experiencing a little of the torment he has brought on the rest of society.

My Security word for MI5's benefit) is farm-bank.(Plenty of room for snouts in the trough there, I suspect!)

The London march WILL be hi-jacked as are all the other "peaceful" marches around the world.
It only takes a few well placed idiots to destroy what could/should be the voices of the people!
We will all be watching the madness unfold on our T.V. screens and the message will be lost, yet again!

Laurie
If these demonstrations are seen on the World's TV screens, at least their actions will be transparent, which is more than can be said for the fraudulent activities of the bunch of bankers that have got us all in this mess!

John,
It is always the violence that is shown, we all know only too well!
I could not agree with you more about the bunch of crimminals who got us into this mess but how many of them end up in prison?
Answer:- None, they get given bonuses!

The whole financial situation is beyond my comprehension - every time I ask where has the money gone, I get lost. If it's all gone to bankers and fund managers, surely they have invested it or deposited it somewhere so what has happened to that?

Anyway, that's way off-topic, but I can guarantee that whatever good people think they will do by joining marches, protests and other events, as Laurie says, just violence will get shown and all points of view will be tarnished. The best way would be for 'serious' groups to stay away and let the police give the trouble makers the treatment they deserve.
