Red Nose fun in Bournemouth and Poole area

FRIDAY the 13th is the day to dispel the economic gloom and doom. Instead you are being urged to Do Something Funny for Money.

As well as having a great time you will be boosting the coffers of Comic Relief and changing someone’s life for good.

From supporting orphans, helping a child growing up under the shadow of domestic violence, a dad living with mental health problems or a lonely elderly person with dementia. The list of worthy causes which will benefit from Comic Relief this year is endless.

There are a host of fund-raising events being staged across the area with all ages joining in activities from primary school children dressing up in their pyjamas and red noses to supermarket managers washing customers’ cars.

Send in your Red Nose Day pictures and we'll upload them to our gallery!

Big-hearted office workers are also doing their bit by having their legs waxed, heads shaved and beards shorn.

Cash-strapped companies across the conurbation are pushing out the boat for Red Nose Day which has raised more than £424 million since its launch in 1985. Spurred on by the vision to create a just, poverty-free world, the charity will spend all the money raised today on providing a helping hand to poor and disadvantaged people in the UK and Africa.

Celebrities are also joining in the mischief with a TV extravaganza lined up for tonight including Comic Relief Does The Apprentice and Let’s Dance for Comic Relief.

Raising cash has never been so much fun. This year, to be part of Red Nose Day 2009, you just need to Do Something Funny for Money!

All ages will be Doing Something Funny for Money on Red Nose Day (Friday, March 13):

  • Babies, toddlers and staff at the Tiny Tots nursery on Wimborne Road, Bournemouth, will be taking part in a balloon race to raise funds for Comic Relief.
  • Many schools are supporting the worthwhile cause with pupils at St Katharine’s in Southbourne donning their pyjamas and red noses.
  • Hundreds of pupils at Bournemouth’s Avonbourne and Portchester schools pupils will wear fancy dress before running a mile for Comic Relief.
  • There will be a sponsored fancy dress at Queen’s Park junior school on East Way while students and staff at Twynham school in Christchurch will attempt to break the world record for having the highest number of people dressed as superheroes in one place at one time.
  • Staff at Specsavers opticians on Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, will be wearing red, challenging customers during a video game contest and carrying out free repairs to glasses in exchange for a donation to Comic Relief.
  • If staff at the Nationwide Building Society on Richmond Hill manage to raise £2,000 manager Richard Goss has pledged to have his head shaved and manager Mike Sadler will say goodbye to the goatee beard he has sported for more than 15 years.
  • Workers at neighbouring Ceuta Healthcare will be dressing up for a Red Nose Goes Global Day while LV will be supplying its call centre to take donations. Employees will take part in a variety of fund-raising events with a band performing in the car park under the company’s County Gates headquarters from noon until 2pm.
  • In Poole, pupils at Hamworthy Middle School will be wearing their pyjamas in the classroom and St Edwards at Oakdale will provide the setting for fund-raising events including wet sponge throwing at teachers.

  • Fourteen boat builders at the Sunseeker yard will shave their heads for Comic Relief and Sainsbury’s manager Paul Barlow will be throwing caution to the winds and dressing up as a ballerina at the Poole store.
  • Boscombe traders will be holding a Red Nose assault course in the afternoon with teams representing local businesses and residents taking part. There will be market stalls, a hog roast and karaoke along with a performance by BournemouthAID to raise funds for Comic Relief at 4pm (see page 34 of Friday's Daily Echo).
  • At Ferndown Upper School students will take part in a fund-raising quiz. Events continue on Saturday with fund-raising events at the Sainsbury’s store on Ringwood Road.
