A CONTROVERSIAL Bournemouth councillor is once again under pressure to resign after he forwarded a “racist” email to all his councillor colleagues.

Only last month, Cllr David Shaw was expelled from the Conservative group for his failure to hand over the profits from selling air festival programmes. He repaid the debt days later but his behaviour was labelled “totally unacceptable” by council leader Cllr Stephen MacLoughlin.

Now an independent councillor, although not a member of the Independent group, he is the subject of a new complaint after forwarding a “Proud to be White” email to all Bournemouth councillors.

The email falsely claims to quote Seinfeld actor Michael Richards, who in 2006 stunned a comedy club audience with a racist outburst.

It contains a string of offensive terms, including the N-word, and asks why there are specialist organisations and occasions for black and ethnic minority people, but not for white people.

“You are proud to be black, brown, yellow and orange, and you’re not afraid to announce it. But when we announce our white pride, you call us racists.

“You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us. But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member or beats up a black drug-dealer running from the law and posing a threat to society, you call him a racist.”

It ends with a challenge to pass the email on “if you are proud enough”.

Liberal Democrat Cllr Claire Smith said she was “outraged” by the email.

“In sending that email on and responding to that challenge, he is supporting the views in that email, which uses incredibly racist language.

“It is unacceptable for any councillor to do that.

“It’s now time for him to go.

“This is why we have problems in our society – because we have idiots like this dragging us back into the past.”

But Cllr Shaw was unrepentant. He said: “That email is merely thoughts that I want to put in everybody’s minds.”

When asked what he hoped to achieve by sending the email, he said: “Freedom of speech, which we don’t have at the moment in council.”

And he added: “I’m proud to be English and white” before insisting: “I have no intention at the moment of standing down.”

Pam Donnellan, chief executive of Bournemouth Borough Council, said they had received a formal complaint about Cllr Shaw, which would be considered in accordance with legal procedures.
