Elderly pair found poisoned in Poole flat

AN ELDERLY couple are today recovering after they were discovered unconscious in their Poole flat suffering carbon monoxide poisoning.

Police were called to the flat on Westminster Road, Branksome Park, just before 2pm on Thursday (February 12) and found the pair out cold in their kitchen.

The couple were rushed to Poole Hospital having inhaled the potentially deadly and odourless gas.

Southern Gas Networks was called and the block of flats was evacuated.

The leak was traced to a faulty boiler and the problem will be fully investigated.

Police said the couple made a full recovery in hospital.

Its about time there was legislation to make having a carbon monoxide detector and a smoke alarm compulsory. If you are a landlord make them do it. if you selling your house instead of having to have an Energy certificate and HIPS you should be made to ensure there are alarms. Elderly People should be given one free, they are not that expensive now. Instead of telling us how to eat and drink the government should use the money spent on adverts and campaigns to make Carbon monoxide and smoke detectors compulsory

In a round about way, this is being done. Firefighters are being taken away from front-line duties and are put on home safety projects, promoting alarms (and fitting them for free) and checking for faulty appliances.

If there are not the number of calls to justify the number of operational Firefighters, then perhaps they are better deplyed promoting home and personal safety.

Without getting into arguments over what fire fighters should or should not be doing, if twelve people have died in fires in this County and that is four times the national average then something is seriously worng.

I believe if it was made law when selling or renting a house we would not need to take the fire service away from the front line. It is up to the householder to help themslves but there will always be someo one who does not bother. Look what happened at Harbour Reach the builders or landlords should have been better checked to make sure detectors are there as a matter of course.

Smoke detectors can be purchased for under £5 because of the volume purchased due to safety advertising CO detectors cost £20 perhaps the Government should introduce a campaign to bring the price of CO detectors down by dropping Vat on vital safe equipment

Is this the same plot of land that replaced the old gas works?
The very same that was “suggested” in 1975 that no building should take place for at least 50 years?
