OPINION: Surfdogs and the big questions

THE news that the surf reef contractors ASR have decamped to India is the latest astonishing twist in the sorry saga.

So, in a nod to Slumdog Millionaire, the question of the day is this.

Is the Boscombe reef project, overdue and overbudget:

  • A) A farce.
  • B) A scandal.
  • C) A laughing stock.
  • D) A resigning issue.

The answer is becoming increasingly clear. All of them.

The head of leisure services, Roger Brown, whose department was in charge of the project, had his own Sir Fred Goodwin moment, when he was quizzed by a special scrunity panel of councillors on Wednesday.

Like the former banker, Mr Brown apologised for the turn of events. In a series of amazing admissions, he revealed corners had been cut, a structural survey had not been carried out, costs have spiralled out of control and project management has been thin, and that’s putting it mildly.

Belatedly, the council had parachuted in a new project leader in the shape of the experienced Geoff Turnbull whose job it will be to make a silk purse out of dog’s breakfast.

This whole episode has been a shambles and despite the town hall spin liberally applied, a massive and expensive embarrassment for the council.

Nor should councillors be allowed to escape criticism for failing to keep on top of what has been happening in their name. If this was the private sector, people would lose their jobs.

In the cosy, protected alternative reality of local government, this is the least likely outcome.

The India project is being funded by Tsunami money. Maybe there’s another disaster pot that Bournemouth can get some cash from.

For a disaster this most surely is.

How can it be a disaster ?

Developers have made money building on previously public land.

Numerous experts and consultants have been handsomely paid.

Councillors have had a nice trip to New Zealand - and, cynics might add, 'much else besides' !

Those that have bought property in the 'Moneycombe' complex are assured that with very reduced parking spaces and Sea Road now double yellow lined there will be far less of the riff raff element that normally heads towards the pier.

Trebles and dodgy handshakes all round, old boy !

Time for some Anarchy and Revolution methinks !

How much longer do we allow these Muppets, local and national to squander our money ?

the scary thing is that failed projects before this were disregarded and ignored as the real estate had to be sold - what a mess unable to face the truth as money was at stake -real estate sales will suffer.

hat a disasterous world we libve in when lies and spin take over and we have council doing a rob peter to pay paul and take drivel in the form of twice as many surfing days with double the size and knee height wave bu,mps being transformed to overhead numbers fives on a scale of a pipeline 8 - oh the kiddies lapped it up with the speed of a kiddy crowd around a man in trenchcoat handing out sweets?

dont blame the kiddies they couldnt help it as they just like sweets -those that manipulated their childish desire for sweet waves is the blame. the reef at one stage when interest was waning dropped to 250,000 pounds as reported on a local web site by one of the "sweet loving " kiddies.
