SURF REEF: How much for surf pods? Council won't say

TAXPAYERS have been assured the entire £1.8million overspend will be covered by the sale of the new surf pods – so why can’t we be told how much they will cost?

The council has repeatedly insisted that the budget shortfall will not fall directly on taxpayers but will be covered by the sale of the Wayne Hemingway-designed beach huts.

But when the Echo asked how much they would be sold for, we were told only that “the market will determine the price.”

Roger Brown, director of leisure services, said: “It would not place the council in the best position, in terms of sales income, to put a price on the surf pods at this stage.

“The market will determine the price, and our confidence in selling the Hemingway surf pods is based on the advice of experienced property agents.

“Demand for beach huts along the whole of our seafront remains high and hugely outstrips demand. Previous beach hut sales, as recently as January, have seen huts selling off-plan.

“Because of this and the fact that we are seeing strong interest for these unique beach huts, we remain confident that each pod will be sold at the actively marketed price.”

Exactly - I actually agree with Roger Brown. We'd all complain if the council charged too little and they all sold out in 5 minutes flat. If I was them Id be playing my cards close to my chest as well.

We are probably not being told the sale price of these surf pods yet, as they have been booked as rest and recuperation accommodation for the Reef construction workers for this Summer.Life's a Beach,or a b.itch, if you are a Council Taxpayer!

I bet Bournemouth Council employees and counsellors families get first choice of these 'Beach Huts' and at a reduced rate and there won't be any left for anyone else.

Rather different to what was originally stated.

"42 super clalets available for day hire or lease "

So how come they have been renamed surf pods and are now being flogged off.

I wonder how much longer it will be before these shysters try and flog off parts of the beach - under the guise of some spurious benefit to the local community.

A King Canute visitor centre funded by the building of 50 luxury beach appartments, perhaps.

"and our confidence in selling the Hemingway surf pods is based on the advice of experienced property agents."

"Our confidence"
Is that the same confidence that got you in this mess ?

I hope they are more experienced than the bankers and government !!

They'll start at 500K each and then keep dropping the price until they sell, maybe !

Security word cash-talk says it all !!

Roger Brown and Co cannot fix a price because they must see how much more they will have to spend to try and get the reef finished in the first place. This will then depict what price will be put on the Surf Pods. Or there is a list waiting the rich man bids to come in.

What a fiasco, what utter tush.

from the "times on line"

"More than £10m from the Indian government’s Tsunami Rehabilitation Programme has been allocated to areas that were not affected by the tsunami. Kerala Tourism has disguised the diversion of the funds as “coastal protection” in an attempt to quell local outrage, but the works consist almost entirely of extravagant construction projects designed to maximise the profit potential of the once sleepy resort of Kovalam.

One of these projects is the construction of an artificial surf reef that has been designed to increase the size of the waves hitting the coast. Local opposition groups claim that turning the bay into a playground for westerners will put 500 fishermen out of work and put fish breeding grounds at risk."

correct john with one small location change - it was Rest and recreation on a boat surfing the mentawai islands or the maldives that a 'debriefing" and counting the proceeds from bournemouth took place -they couldnt help but crow about it.

but they earned the rest with a hectic schedule where they had forgotten

1. work permits
2. rain is wet and makes bags heavier
3.they dont fill in the hour or two quoted
4.india calls and money there is on a time clause expiry (people will starve otherwise)
5.legal action for liquidated damages on false promises for surparks LLC is a distraction.
6 blacks opanake reef and meades mount reef need to be um ..finished
7.oh brevard county have sent them packing for being 120 times too optimistic on the benefits they say a surf reef has ( boiled sweets for the kiddies when it falls over))
8.us corps of engineesr starting to get wise on whats going on
9.bournemouth has to close and pack up all things for community use to support reef completion
10.the nigerian layer wants some cut of the action etc
11.indians also getting wise to amount of benefits to expect
12. artificial reefs getting outlawed by locals and governments at global locations
12. monorails look a better proposition as reef opertunities dry up

13. damm it cut the loss's and retreat to the new island purchase in the mentawais.

etc etc

sounds alright ome -i'm envious or am i when i cant show my face at every beach without being cursed by surfers who know they were "exploited"

serious sportspeople know offal from a healthy product and when they are being used for others gain
