BURLY John Sergeant may be noticeable by his absence but afternoon tea dances have become strictly the place to be in Poole.
Older residents have flocked to the bi-monthly events, free from the cutting criticism of judges such as BBC One Strictly Come Dancing’s Arlene Phillips, who said the ex-political journalist was “outstanding at dancing really badly”.
Regular Poole tea dancer Len Briers said: “It’s good exercise and wonderful for making friendships.
“A lot of people come on their own but we don’t let them stay on their own for long and you can’t beat live music.”
The first tea dance 12 months ago attracted so many older residents that organisers had to double the size of the venue.
Borough of Poole launched the afternoon events to encourage older residents to keep fit and active and now around 80 keen dancers, complete novices and many who just enjoy listening to the music, turn up.
To celebrate its success, a Grand New Year Tea Dance at Lighthouse today will feature musicians from Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra playing everything from waltzes to tango, jive and jazz.
And the main concert hall has been booked to stage the event.
“We’re very excited about this special event,” said Anna Shiels of Borough of Poole’s arts development unit.
“Our regulars know there is always a warm and friendly atmosphere at our tea dances.
“This event will be extra special with a marvellous six-piece band and a spacious dance floor in the main concert hall.
“I hope people will take the opportunity to make a group booking and help the party go with a swing,” she said.
The Grand New Year Tea Dance takes place from 2pm to 4pm. Tickets need to be booked in advance and cost £5 available from the Lighthouse on 0844 406 8666.
Further tea dances are planned for March 12 and May 21.
