A PARCEL marked fragile was “shot-putted over a six foot fence” by a specialist delivery company, according to the furious man who received it.

Guy Penwarden, 50, of Churchill Road, Parkstone, said he only realised he’d had a delivery from City Link after going to investigate an “almighty crash”.

He told the Daily Echo he saw a delivery van heading off down the road, then discovered the battered parcel at the base of the fence.

He said: “Despite the fact that all surfaces were marked fragile, it had clearly been shot-putted over the fence, and had smashed on the driveway.”

Fortunately the contents were not a priceless gift, but tins of organic dog food for his pet Bruno, which arrived dented.

He said: “It is all replaceable, but it makes me wonder how many other parcels are getting destroyed by City Link.”

He added: “I think it’s disgusting. Had it been a computer or something it would have been ruined.”

He also questioned if the delivery driver had looked before dropping the 20lb parcel over the fence into the garden where his dog plays.

Stuart Godman, sales and marketing director, said: “In line with company policy we are carrying out a thorough investigation into this incident.

“We at City Link take all our customer complaints extremely seriously.

“The company takes pride in its work. The quality and speed at which we deliver to our customers is of paramount importance. Every one of our drivers receives ongoing, extensive training in a bid to provide our customers with the very best level of service.”

Yet another complaint about City Link. I have heard so many bad things about them, I deliberately avoid buying online from companies who use them. Some of the traders on Amazon use them & most of the bad feedback they get is because of the awful service provided by City Link.

Firstly a shot put weighs about 16 pounds so the delivery driver would have probably needed 2 hands thus not rendering it a technical shot put. Secondly if the poor victim didnt see it how does he know it was "putted" and not tossed. Thirdly is "putted" the correct use of english?
Fourthly they didnt smash the dented.
Fifthly does anyone actually understand why this is news??

rant over.

Perhaps its not "News" in the sense but it might highlight to other people who have had to suffer the shambles that is City Link.

I know of others that have suffered there rude drivers and staff. There un-helpfull staff and constant poor excuses.

Like others I will not buy from companies that use them as a courier and if possible ask companies that use them if they will use a other company and if not I buy else where.

Fragile and Handle with Care equates to "Dont Throw so hard or jam in the van with the door" for City Link.

I've heard many ex Target employees complain how City-link ruined a once good company when they took Target over.

Just wondering how the driver managed to get a signature if the parcel was 'shot-putted' over the fence?

City link are the worst of the worst you only have to look at the state of there vans and the way they drive them.
But in all fairness they are cheap and they pay there drivers peanuts so the old saying goes you pay peanuts and get monkeys working for you.
Also city link are not the worst Eatons transport of Poole make city link look like eddie stobbart.

Apart from the lengthy queues in their delivery office I've never really had any problems with City Link.
Royal Mail on the other hand regularly fold up envelopes marked "Please do not bend", and hid a parcel in my meter cupboard without leaving a card.
Perhaps i just have a substandard postie.

Just to make it clear, I am not talking city link here, but I have had parcels thrown over my back fence, and even posted through my lounge window with a note stuck to the front door advertising the fact from a mail order catalogue. It infuriates me. This is because, like city link, these delievery drivers have delivery targets, so rather than knock on a neighbours door (which takes time) or re-schedule a delievery, they dump the parcels where ever they can. It's terrible!

I'm sick of the local postman leaving parcels in my front garden while i am at work all day and throwing them over our 6ft back gate (which opens anyway for putting it behind or theifes to come and get it.

If somebody pays for special delivery it should not be left in this way! I must have complained 5 times to royal mail but it still continues

I have to say that all the deliveries I receive are excellently handled by Parcel Force, City Link, ANC etc.

However, the fact that that the drivers are paid (allegedly) about £1.60 per drop and can be assigned over 100 drops per day might explain some hurried deliveries.

"extensive training" ?
Drive to the address, drop off the parcel. Repeat.

A couple of years ago I purchased some computer hard drives from a company on Ebay.
These were delivered by City Link in a package clearly marked as "fragile electronic components".
Every one of them was damaged beyond use.
Fortunately the company I bought them from replaced them without question and shipped them via another courier at my request!

I was behind my front door when a card came through the letter box informing that a parcel needed to be collected from the sorting office in Wellington road. I opened the door and asked for said parcel, I was informed that the Postie had never had it they were only delivering the cards ???????????

Sign this giant of a delivery man up for the Olympics! Guaranteed gold!

Congratulations Echo - there have been many poor stories throughout the year, but you've managed to squeeze in the most unnewsworthy story on the final day of the year! Big pat on the back.

Any chance of some decent stories next year - there's plenty out there if you'd go and look or investigate.

Was this by any chance an item with a fee to pay. Royal Mail don't deliver under-paid items, and rightly so!
