ROYALTY rolled into Dorset on Thursday as the Earl of Wessex visited Poole and Christchurch.
Prince Edward visited Poole’s new multi-million-pound fire station, watching a short display by Dorset Fire and Rescue Service’s specialist rescue team and speaking to serving firefighters.
He told them: “Thank you for this oppor- tunity to meet firefighters who do such excellent work in the community,” before joking: “Although I am disappointed I haven’t found a pole.”
Dorset Fire Authority chairman Cllr David Fox said: “The new firestation also demonstrates the commitment of the fire authority to provide the best level of service it possibly can.”
Earlier, the prince made a whistle-stop tour of Poole’s Old Town First School and Nursery, where he was greeted by Poole mayor Joyce Lavender and opened the school’s £3.5 million extension, unveiling a commemorative plaque.
Head teacher Gill Taylor said: “We have received tremendous support from parents and staff throughout the project and we were delighted to welcome His Royal Highness to our school for this special occasion.”
In the afternoon the prince also officially open the newly-built Waterman’s Park in Somerford, where he was greeted by flag-waving schoolchildren and residents.
Cllr Julie Petrie, chairman of the Frogs community group, showed the Prince around the play facilities. She said: “It was a fantastic visit. He was so lovely to everyone. It was an experience that will stay with the local children and the community for a long time.”
The prince also found time to officially open Dorset County Council’s adult services complex in Jumpers Road, consisting of Avon View Residential Care Home, Bure House and the rebuilt Juniper Centre for adults with learning disabilities.
