Voodoo Vega + Quireboys, Mr Kyps

Just three months ago the roof – and it seemed the world, came crashing down at Mr Kyps- Poole’s popular live music venue.

Following freak weather with torrential rain and hail stones slabs of concrete fell without warning just an hour before a gig was due to start.

The venue was forced to close immediately for what is normally its busiest period of the year.

Now, following lengthy rebuilding and renovations at the Grade II listed building – costing around £200,000, Mr Kyps is back open and looking pretty spectacular!

At a welcome back party staff revealed its new raised ceiling with colour-changing lights, making it seem far more airy and spacious. It has a fresh new colour scheme, new bar and new carpets too.

Owner Mark Kyp or ‘Kyp’who has run Mr Kyps there for seven years said: “It was getting a bit tired. Mr Kyps was always about spit and sawdust and the renovations were forced on us- we had no choice due to heath and safety issues. The last three months have been really tough but we are grateful no one was in the building when those lumps of concrete fell and that’s what’s kept us going.”

But he said he was looking forward to a new chapter in the life of Mr Kyps.

“These are new and exciting times. Nice entertainment doesn’t have to cost a fortune. We will continue to give value for money-our average ticket price is £10 and we will continue to try and keep live music alive. We’ve had the odd complaint that we book too many tribute bands.

“We are just delighted to be open as a few weeks ago I was losing the will to live! We would never have been able to afford this in other circumstances so it was a blessing in disguise!”

He couldn’t have picked two finer original bands to kick the club back into action.

Local band Voodoo Vegas threatened to lift the new roof right off with their storming set of rock hard rock n roll.

Legendary headliners The Quireboys were totally awesome – raw rock music at its absolute best, spiced with edgy riffs and driving, infectious rhythms. Irish charmer Spike with his rough and ready delivery and gritty vocals is one hell of an entertainer.

It all bodes well for the future!
