DORSET’S Christmas and New Year drink drive campaign got under way this morning (December 1), with roadside checkpoints and increased police patrols.
Officers have warned offenders they face tough penalties if caught behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the festive season.
From today, everyone involved in a collision will be breathalysed, regardless of whether they are suspected of drink or drug driving.
And members of the public are also being asked to blow the whistle on offenders.
Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, head of the Dorset Police traffic unit, urged drivers to think about the consequences of their actions, which could include a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.
“There may also be further financial or social consequences such as losing your job or relationship,” he said. “I’d urge motorists to ask themselves whether it’s really worth it.”
Chief Insp Nichols suggested motorists do not drink any alcohol at all before driving and added: “Research shows that even one drink can impair your driving – people should just not take the risk.
“If you are going out for a social drink over the festive period, then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely and without having to drive yourself.
“Simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation should be taken.”
Members of the public have been asked to dial 999 if they suspect a vehicle is being driven by someone who has been drinking or taking drugs. They can also give non-urgent information by calling 01202 222222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
