'Drink driving: is it really worth it?'

DORSET’S Christmas and New Year drink drive campaign got under way this morning (December 1), with roadside checkpoints and increased police patrols.

Officers have warned offenders they face tough penalties if caught behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs during the festive season.

From today, everyone involved in a collision will be breathalysed, regardless of whether they are suspected of drink or drug driving.

And members of the public are also being asked to blow the whistle on offenders.

Chief Inspector Bob Nichols, head of the Dorset Police traffic unit, urged drivers to think about the consequences of their actions, which could include a minimum 12-month driving ban, a criminal record, up to six months in prison and a fine of up to £5,000.

“There may also be further financial or social consequences such as losing your job or relationship,” he said. “I’d urge motorists to ask themselves whether it’s really worth it.”

Chief Insp Nichols suggested motorists do not drink any alcohol at all before driving and added: “Research shows that even one drink can impair your driving – people should just not take the risk.

“If you are going out for a social drink over the festive period, then plan ahead to make sure you can get home safely and without having to drive yourself.

“Simple steps such as booking a taxi, having a designated driver in your group of friends or arranging overnight accommodation should be taken.”

Members of the public have been asked to dial 999 if they suspect a vehicle is being driven by someone who has been drinking or taking drugs. They can also give non-urgent information by calling 01202 222222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Anyone who drinks and drives is an idiot, but with the Court giving out sentences like this you could possibly understand why people do !!

its not really for me to be advising the chief constable but why do younot pull cars coming away from pubs of an evening ???? i am not convinced that men going home from work drive to a pub in their vans and cars ,stay there for a couple of hours and DONT have a few drinks which inevitably - no matter what the driver might think - puts them over the limit as they drive away .because the car park is usually empty by 11 o'clock and they havent all been on orange juice !!! and yet it happens every night of the year .... never mind over christmas, why do the police advertise these campaigns,do it ,tell no-one and get these ignorant, dangerous fools off the road. if you have an accident they always do a breath test these days so nothing new there. there is no reason for anyone ever to drink and drive and the police should be constantly chasing it so why dont they.... come on echo ,get some answers, thats what responsible reporting is all about

Apart from the ban and the fine I would like to see drink drivers cars and vans confiscated and then crushed.
