UPDATED WITH PICTURES - Car destroys beach hut

A CAR drove off a cliff and ended upside down on top of a beach hut on the promenade.

The drama unfolded in the early hours of Saturday at West Cliff by the bowling green, Bournemouth.

A witness phoned police to say he thought he had seen the car plunge over the cliff, and could see the car upside down on the promenade.

Emergency services found a male driver was in a red Nissan Primera.

He was treated at the scene for chest pains before he was taken to Poole Hospital. His injuries were said to be not life threatening.

Police closed off a section of West Overcliff Drive with West Cliff Road, and put barriers up by a damaged section of fence. They brought in a hydraulic crane to move the vehicle.

The beach hut, owned by a Bournemouth woman, was destroyed by the impact.

Is this different to the one that happened midnight Friday just by the path leading to the steps down to Durley Chine? Beach Hut number 199.

I know there is a waiting list for beach huts but I think it's unfair to jump the queue this way !!!!
Seriously, I'm glad no-one is seriously injured and wish the car driver a speedy recovery

I am pleased the guy is ok but as for the wrecked car....put it in the sea and make an artificial reef.

i'm surprised the tolerant people of dorset aren't calling for an immediate ban on cars. After all it's only a metter of time before someone's killed/think of the children blah de blah.

oh no that's only bikes isn't it?

Looking at the picture, the beachhut has been destroyed into a black hole or was it a blank space.

LOL its a sad sign of the times I guess when people are more interested in the car than the poor guy driving it. Seriously I hope the bloke makes a speedy recovery even if his no claims dosn't. As for the poor beach hut owners....D'OH!.

it's true amused it's not always but if you look back through the archives it seems that some senior citizens have a penchant for extreme beachut diving. have they got their own website or do they post the dives on youtube?

What a complete muppet, how do you manage to drive over a cliff? - Well, unfit to drive I assume!!

Ban this guy from driving he obviously can't handle a car - unless of course medical reasons were behind the crash, even so could have quite easily have killed someone or hit my beach hut! ;)

Quite a genius way to destroy a beach hut though - death by flying car. Always worth trying for an ex's beachut, tho aiming mite be quite difficult.
