‘Flats won’t have to be demolished’

THE building contractor for the luxury apartments that dramatically collapsed in Mudeford at the weekend has played down claims the flats will have to be demolished.

The roof of two of the four-storey homes on the multi-million pound Iridium development, at the newly refurbished Christchurch Harbour Hotel, formerly the Avonmouth Hotel, collapsed into the lower floors on Saturday afternoon taking the scaffolding with it.

A team of sub-contractors who were in the building at the time managed to escape uninjured.

The Health and Safety Executive and independent investigators visited the site on Monday to begin an inquiry into the cause of the incident.

Scaffolders were called to the site late on Saturday morning to shore up the wall, but it collapsed shortly afterwards.

Everett Jones, who lives in Falcon Drive near to the hotel, said: “We heard the rumbling from the Quay on Saturday and came down to see what was going on.

“Judging by what has happened, I am sure some more of the building will fall before it is pulled down.

“Since the building started it has caused local residents so many problems, with the roads being closed and the noise.

“The repercussions from this will be massive.”

He added: “One thing people in Mudeford are grateful for is that fact that it fell when the place was not teeming with people, so thankfully there were no injuries.”

Midas Group, which has been building there for over a year, said the five people who were in the building when it collapsed were sub-contractors, not Midas staff.

A spokesperson said: “It is pure speculation that the building will have to be demolished. We cannot elaborate any further at the moment but stand by our original statement.”

The statement said: “Midas Construction are the principal contractor on the Iridium Development in Christchurch. An isolated part of the development site was the subject of structural movement to one dwelling over the weekend.

“In conjunction with the relevant authorities, Midas are investigating this incident.

“Midas’s first priority is safety and as a precautionary measure, work on site has been temporarily suspended and the adjacent road closed.”

The site was expected to reopen on Tuesday.

What chaos, its just 1 big joke after another, even if they knock them down it will just prolong the agony & create more disruption & stress, I am sure they will have something else up their sleeve.

I can't see people stampeeding to buy one of these flats now. After this, insurance companies may refuse buildings cover, which will make them all unsellable.

Until the independent assessors determine the exact cause it is difficult to speculate the outcome.
It could be subsidence, it could be top heavy design, it could be poor quality building materials. But whatever the cause it shouldn't of happened - and could of had fatal consequences.
I do hope that CBC and the planning authorities go back to the drawing board with this one! Revise the plans and make the crescent two smaller blocks as per one of the original designs.

btw. isn't Rhodes South due to open this weekend?

When you say it shouldn't of happened, I and alot of other people think they shouldn't have been given permission to build the things in the 1st place. As I said before they do what they want anyway. We have an no works traffic sign at the end of the road but they still come down here and park, like I said nothing but chaos. The road is open but we now have traffic lights.

I'm in total agreement about building in the conservation area -
There were plenty of residents opposing the Kings Arms development - but CBC gave it the go ahead. But its not just their fault - the jokers at Bristol are permitting most appeals - just look at Avon Run Road and the two modern monstrosities. 52-54 Stanpit are now going to appeal. If they win (and no doubt Bristol will rule in their favour) CBC have to pay costs (funded by us the tax payer) and can not impose any building restrictions.
Luckily a modern development at 119 Mudeford has been withdrawn - as that would of caused even more controversy here in Mudeford.
As for the work traffic and road closures the council have been extremely inept. The management of the whole scheme has been a joke. I think that all of the residents affected by this prolonged unmanaged development should demand a Council Tax rebate!
