SATURDAY'S much anticipated appearance by the Vulcan XH558 at the Bournemouth Air Festival has been cancelled after technicians were not available to inspect repairs carried out to the plane.

After the vintage bomber's last flight on Friday August 22, it was discovered that the XH588 had suffered failure of the retraction mechanism for one of its landing gear doors.

Although the repair was a relatively simple one and was completed, technicians required to inspect it are not available until Monday said the Vulcan team today.

A council spokesperson said: "We are really disappointed that the Vulcan can't be here and we look forward to welcoming it to Bournemouth at the earliest opportunity."

Totally gutted! But not totally shocked. A can-do attitude by the people concerned would have been much appreciated by a lot of people. Hey-ho.....

It's sad that the vulcan won't be here but better safe than sorry. Enjoy the display everyone!

Many thanks to the jobsworth that cannot make themself available.
To know that people with the power to avoid disappointing thousands just cannot be bothered is so frustrating.
Any bets on them being public sector employees?

You know it, Mark.

Why didn't they employ the ever punctual private sector who were going to have Boscombe's Surf Reef finished by the end of this week and Poole 's Second Bridge built two years ago?!

Totally gutted as well. Been looking forward to seeing the Vulcan for a long time now. Was sad when she didn't make The Cowes Fireworks the other week as well. Still at least she's still working, will just have to live in hope!

The people who maintain this aircraft are volunteers who rely on donations to keep the aircraft in the skies. Therefore they obviously have other jobs to do and/or other committments.

It is said that the Vulcan will not be with us this weekend, but maintenance and safety is paramount, we all agree.

With success of the Air Festival so far, and overall come Monday. No doubt the Vulcan will be at the next Bournemouth Air Festival.

Keep up the good work Vulcan in the Skies Trust.

The good folks who maintain the Vulcan are indeed all volunteers. And good luck and best wishes to all of them.
But the safety assessors are not volunteers, they are external inspectors, employed to do a job, and it's thanks to them that we won't get to see the Vulcan this weekend.

What! Both these schemes have been bogged down by public sector bureaucrats and incompetence.
The private sector cannot start a project until the public sector have all their authorisations etc in place, in both cases the faults are not with the construction firms.
Foul up in the increasingly unaccountable public sector and you still get paid (and a pension for life) in the private sector you are out of a job.

It's a shame but safety must come first.
surely the technicians were aware of the vulcans' flight schedule? Let's hope we don't have to wait another year to see the vulcan in flight over B'mth.

As a child - I went to RAF Finningly in the 1960's. Saw a Vulcan squadran scramble. So one flying overhead - no comparison - especially when it does not have an atomic bomb on board

With at least two major air shows on this weekend, plus all the other aviation work that goes on at various airports, all needing inspections, I would imagine they are quite a busy bunch of experience salaried people.

There must have been legitimate reasons as to why the Vulcan was not inspected, if this is the case. However, I believe there is enough alternative air displays that will keep every one occupied.

Safety first and all that.

This is the company that inspects the Vulcan: Marshall Aerospace http://www.marshalla

I think complaints should be directed at them not the Vulcan to the Sky Trust.

This is a Statement from the Vulcan to the Sky Trust website released today.

With great regret, the Vulcan to the Sky Trust (VTST) has to announce that the long-awaited appearance of Vulcan XH558 at the Bournemouth and Shoreham Airshows over the weekend of 30th and 31st August will not now be possible.

VTST were very much looking forward to bringing Vulcan XH558 to the South Coast, and remain fully aware of the huge public interest that has been created by the much anticipated return of the aircraft to these displays.

After her last flight on Friday 22nd August, it was discovered that XH558 had suffered a failure of the retraction mechanism for one of her landing gear doors, grounding the aircraft. Whilst the repair was relatively simple, unfortunately due to circumstances beyond VTST’s control, the technicians from Marshall Aerospace, XH558’s Engineering Authority, who are required to inspect and certify the repair, are not available until Monday.

Robert Pleming, Chief Executive of the Vulcan to the Sky Trust said “Our policy that safety is paramount dictates that we must do everything by the book. We must adhere absolutely to the processes and procedures which ensure that XH558 will be safe when she flies. Both the Trust and Marshall Aerospace are extremely sad that despite every effort, the Vulcan is unable to appear at Bournemouth and Shoreham. This is a huge disappointment for us, but more so for all of those who were looking forward to seeing XH558 this weekend.”

It's worth losing your job in the private sector, if like the Executives and higher management of Banks, etc., you can make massive c.ock-ups and still leave with bonuses and pensions worth millions....whilst the rest of the country struggles because of your mistakes.

The Vulcan was a bomber capable of mass destruction on a global scale. Yes it was a beautiful piece of engineering. But in the Cuban - cold war crisis - did I care whether it looked nice - or the fact that it could contibute to my nuclear death - I do not think so.

The Company that inspects the Vulcan are Marshall Aerospace Ltd, one of Europe's leading privately - owned aerospace companies.
Presumably, all bets are off whilst you go and shoot the Sheriff!

Marshalls of Cambridge like so many private of firms of their type and size. They might just as well be in the public sector - they are riddled with corporate arthritis. Hopeless and totally dependent on governement contracts.A can-do mentality? I think not - you'd need time lapse photography to detect movement. Hopeless, bureaucratic lot.

A pal of mine sent a message to Marshall expressing annoyance at the absence of the XH558 this weekend. He received a rather terse response from Marshall, however apparently the email is confidential so he thought it best not to copy it to me. I agree with Christopher's comments regarding safety but the child in me is still stamping my foot, clenching my fist and screaming "I want to see it now!!!"

Shame the tree cutting committee of the council weren't qualified to inspect the Vulcan, funny how when it is a public annoyance they are there to frustrate bang on time, but when it is for one's enjoyment they are not - and they wonder why Poole & Bournemouth are declared unhappy counties.

PS Will all the brainwashed environmentalists please go and sit in a pile of their own compost and keep away - when the CO2 lies are revealed I want an apology an a tax refund

One aircraft not showing, other aircraft could have been on display. Does not anyone appreciate what has gone into the organizing of the Air Festival. This is the first one, and its success will be the ticket to more whether annually or whatever. The amount of negativity might result in other thoughts.

So far with the unfortunate exception of the missing Vulcan, the festival has been a success, a high success, and I for one hope there will be more. And with the success, it is more than likely there will be more and more aircraft.

I think there was a comment by the Commodore in a news clip of additions already in the planning for future events.

Lets face it, up until yesterday, we had not had an Air show for 16 years or more, with the exception of the superb Red Arrows at other shows, and nothing else to really shout about. Now we have it, it is still not enough.

I think you are missing the brunt of the frustration in relation to the no showing of the Vulcan, not only was the plane arguably the most anticipated aircraft to be shown, but the manner in which the cancellation has been announced due to the unavailablity of technicians and people are struggling to understand why someone couldnt have pulled their finger out to get the historic aircraft in the air in time and why we have so many pen pushing jobs worth in positions of authority. The event so far is good no doubt

What a shame! I was going to bring the kids down today, but now i won't as it was really only the Vulcan Dad wanted to see. As a private poilot I can tell you that the aviation industry is full of dedicated, passionate people. None more so than the team who put the Vulcan back in the air. I'm sure the "examiners" are no shirkers either...they are not helped by increasing amounts of Eurocrat nonsense.

My real concern? It's that such a fragile aircraft, with such limited funding may have to stop flying for good at any time. Get to one of the remaining displays as quickly as you can folks...it may be your last chance to see it.
Well done to Bournemouth for putting on the show.

Well what a load of comments.
The Avro Vulcan XH558 is an awfully complicated piece, and the technical expertise in maintaining her none too straightforward either. Costs are covered by donation and http://www.tvoc.co.u
k would welcome all.
The aircraft was not totally repaired and it is anticipated that next week this will happen and then the authorization given.
She is awesome, she is fantastic, she is virtually rebuilt and therefore some hiccups. Safety first and these will be overcome.
She is costly and to guarantee her future appearances, funds are needed, over to you/us.

Such a shame she will not be there. I saw her fly at Farnborough this year and her performance was heart stopping. Hearing her engines howl again was a sound worth waiting for. Lets keep our fingers crossed for her future and hope that we may see her again in all her glory next year.

It was a shame that Vulcan wasn't there, but the festival is a massive success and the displays have NOT disapointed the crowds. A shame for the people who decided to stay away because of it, they missed out on 4 hours non STOP fantastic flying action. Having not seen Vulcan, it is pretty hard to imagine how today's displays could have possibly been topped. Our family were not disapointed at all. Amazing!! Well done Bournemouth and well done the organisers the pilots and everyone involved. It's the best thing to have happened to Bournemouth in my living memory.
