FATHER ADMITS KILLING BABY

5:56pm Friday 9th May 2008

A MAN has pleaded guilty to killing his three-week-old son.

Kitt Wilson, 25, of Seafield Road in Southbourne was told that he almost certainly faces a prison sentence after admitting manslaughter.

"The one person who Trent should have been able to rely on to protect and care for him – his father – failed to do so and indeed his father was responsible for his death.”

DCI John Crossland, of Dorset Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team

His baby, Trent James Irving Wilson, died at Southampton General Hospital on March 9 last year.

Wilson "lied consistently" to police and healthcare professionals following the incident which occurred when he was in sole charge of baby Trent.

DCI John Crossland, of Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation Team, said: "This is a tragic case where a three-week-old healthy baby died in brutal circumstances and the investigation team's thoughts and sympathies go out to the relatives of baby Trent.

"The exact circumstances of what took place prior to Trent's death may never be fully known, but what can be said is that his father Kitt Wilson lied consistently to health care professionals and the police following Trent receiving the fatal injuries.

"Mr Wilson was in sole charge of Trent and he eventually admitted being responsible for those injuries to his baby son. The one person who Trent should have been able to rely on to protect and care for him - his father - failed to do so and indeed his father was responsible for his death."

The investigation into Trent's death was carried out by Dorset Police's Major Crime Investigation Unit and Child Protection Team. Wilson was remanded into custody following the hearing at Winchester Crown Court and will be sentenced on May 30.
