Arsonists blamed in police van fire

ARSONISTS wrecked a police van while officers carried out inquiries in Poole.

The blaze reduced the van to "a shell" and now an urgent appeal has been launched for information about the offenders.

Firefighters were called to Lagland Street just after 9.30pm on Sunday when passers-by saw the van on fire.

They discovered it had been targeted while Dorset Police officers were involved in routine inquiries at a nearby address.

"The fire appears to have been started deliberately and we are very keen to hear from anyone who saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area at the time," said a police spokesman.

Police ruled out suggestions that they may have been lured to the area by the arsonists and said: "We were not there as the result of a malicious call."

Damage is described as extensive and is likely to cost several thousands of pounds to put right, said the spokesman, who added: "It is just a shell." The van was recovered from the scene and has been taken to a secure site for assessment and repairs.

The incident took place near the Cockleshell pub and officers hope customers may have seen something which may help their inquiries.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dorset Police on 01202 222222 or the free and anonymous Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111. Mobile phone tariffs may apply.

too much crime these days

I am amazed at the stupidity of buying a vehicle that is so inflammable for a purpose where violence and crime are to be expected. Supposing some person or persons had been arrested and locked in that van? They might only have committed some minor crime, like breaking a car window (which may not be regarded as a crime in Norwich unless proof of criminal intent is provided, if a nameless inspector gets her lazy way!)

Or they might only have been drunk, in which case they would contribute to the conflagration and been cremated. Maria, that is an example of ‘dark humour’.

I doubt very much if there had been passengers in the van they would not have diverted to this location unless it was absolutely necessary. I am sure they would not have left the car unattended if it was occupied by others.

HAL101 - all vehicles are of similar flammability... It is impossible to make any vehicle any more flame-proof than they already are, under current vehicle Construction and Use regulations. When you bought your last car (if you even have a car), did you check on its ability to not burn? Was it fire-retardant, or perhaps it's just you who is a bit retarded ...:)

I don't doubt that the people who did this probably are non-tax paying individuals, through illegal or non working. Guess who fits the bill for this in the long run...

Try throwing a gallon of petrol in your car and igniting it- that's how inflammable any vehicle is, If you want it to burn it will !!
If the officers had a prsioner in the van they would not have left the vehicle, what stupid comment !!

No doubt the wonder of our age, The CCTV, will enable Dorset Police to determine what shade of grey hooded top the culprit(s) were wearing. If a camera happened to be pointing in that direction.

Did I check on my latest cars ability not to burn? Er well no actually. But tomorrow, first thing, with a box of marches. Watch the Echo over the next couple of days, you may find me a subject of a story, instead of just commentating. i.e. Echo commentator burns own car in works car park - police are mystified. Would this be a criminal offence. Where is Nick when you need him. Typical copper, never around when wanted.

hang on....if someone was in the van when it went up, would it have really been the police's fault-or the person who deliberatly set light to it???
I would imagine that Poole's finest were there for a good purpose, only to find their van warmer than when they left it.....you can't blame them!!

Following Pete's comment "For your benefit NICK is now a ambulance man.You might soon need him". It's probably fair to mention that the title "ambulanceman" was dropped many years ago as it does not adequately describe the role and is gender descriminatory. nick is an newly recruited Ambulance Care Assistant. his role is to provide basic care and transport to non-emrgency patients.
