THE earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale shook England early on Wednesday morning.

One man was injured when a chimney fell through his bedroom ceiling and many homes and businesses were damaged by the tremor.

The quake's epicentre was near Market Rasen, in Lincolnshire, but people across England said they felt buildings shaking shortly before 1am. Many said the tremors had been strong enough to wake them.

A man from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was taken to hospital after a chimney collapsed and fell into his bedroom. A spokeswoman for South Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We had an emergency call to Wombwell, Barnsley. A chimney had come through the bedroom roof."

She said the man suffered injuries to his pelvis and was taken to Barnsley District Hospital.

She said the service had received only two calls relating to the earthquake - the second was from someone who was frightened.

East Midlands Ambulance Service, which covers Lincolnshire, said there had been a lot of emergency calls but no reports of injuries. "Most of them were from elderly people who were quite frightened," a spokeswoman said.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service dealt with around 200 calls about the earthquake overnight but said they were still dealing with incidents.

A spokesman said: "We've still got some active incidents as daylight has come and people have seen the damage. People are waking up and going to work and finding bits have been displaced on chimney stacks or garden walls."

The spokesman said the worst-hit area appeared to be Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire, but other areas affected included Cleethorpes, Goole, Bridlington and Hull. The North West Ambulance Service said its crews had reported feeling the tremor from Macclesfield to Southport, but they had not heard of any injuries. Merseyside Police and Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they had received reports of tremors but no reports of injuries.

yep definitely felt the house shake. doubt whether much would have been felt in Bournemouth though, too far from the epicentre surely?

yep, i felt this. It was very gentle and lasted approx 30 seconds. I had a glass of milk on a coffee table in front of me, and it was enough to form ripples. Might have been a bit harder to notice otherwise. It was very gentle, and at first i thought id maybe trapped a vein or a nerve or something (it happens sometimes that you can feel your own heratbeat, and i was in a feotal position!)but then i noticed ripples on the top of my milk!

by the way, i live on the forth floor of a five floor block. Maybe as im a little way off the floor, that could be why the building slightly shook? am not sure really.

TREMORS have been felt across England and Wales, according to eyewitness reports this morning.
How can there be eyewitnesses - they couldn't see the earthquake, only see or feel the effects of it.

Felt it up here in Beds. Woke me up - felt like someone was rocking the bed and the wardrobes were rattling for about 15 secs. Took about an hour to get back to sleep! Another life experience to tick off!

I felt the earthquake for about 5 to 10 seconds in Boscombe. The sofa I was sitting on shook and I considered going outside in case it got stronger.

How many of you lonley fools are just pretending you felt the quakes? I don't know anyone I work with (50+) that felt it. Seems like a bit of attention seeking to me.

Was it 'One Quake' or a series of quakes?

After reading the comment threads on the Echo both length and breath of Britain yesterday. There is a huge time span ranging from proximately 12.55pm 26th /02/08 till 7.25 am 27th /02/08.

Although many comments need to be taken with a pinch of salt so to speak. Further investigation may prove fruitful?

I was in Hillsborough in Sheffield on Wednesday morning - about 45 miles away from Market Rasen and we certainly felt the quake up there! The fist I knew was a roaring sound and then the house jolted. No damage in Hillsborough, although a poor lad 5 miles away in Wombwell had his pelvis broken when his chimney came through his bedroom ceiling.

I was woken by what I thought was the wind. It was as though a gust had smacked into the bedroom window. I had no idea it was a quake because we've never experienced anything similar in these parts. 5.2 does sound impressive, though I still can't believe anyone back in Bournemouth could have felt it.

Why would people pretend to feel an earthquake? They were probably all nicely tucked up in bed where they should have been. I thought my bed was being shaken by a ghost (had been watching Most Haunted earlier though!)
